The 3.92 is great for red light runn'n & hill climbing. The 3.55 is for long haul trips. I'm in the same debate, I currently have the 3.55 matched to my 5.2, but I'm between a rock and a hard place.

I love driving, and I put somewhere around 18-20k a year on my truck, I make 2 1,100 (one way) trips a year in it. However, I want that off-the-line wheel smoking and hill climbing power (my 4x4). So now I'm in the great debate...any suggestions...also how much can I find a 3.92 for my 97???

My .02 cents (better late than never). The only answer is 3.90. I bought 3.55 when new but changed to 3.90 last month. I love it. O.D. caused only a small increase in RPM and the easier load on the engine offsets any percieved loss in gas mileage.

Thanks for the $0.02...... How much was the swap....did you just swap the gears or did you swap the entire rear?

get it while it is a cheap option, if you don't, you will be paying several hundred bux later to get it installed. When I get my next truck, I will absolutely NOT buy it unless it is a sure grip axle, and needs to be 3.92

there is my $3.18

Boomer, everything cost about $350 I think. I installed it myself. Bought ring and pinion, install kit, Mopar sealant (for rear pan - no gasket), and synthetic oil.

My truck turns about 2300 rpm's at 75 with the 3.55. What will it spin with 3.93. I have 235/70 15's which are basically stock height but a tad wider. (They are on the 7" rims so didn't want to go bigger.)

I don't have my overdrive ratio numbers here with me (I'm at work) so I will have to guess. I believe your RPM will go up about 250. The tire height doesn't effect the MPH to RPM correlation. Taller or shorter tires will cause your actual MPH to differ from your MPH on speedometer because the sensor is getting it's info from the ring on the carrier.
