"who makes it" is a good question, but if I were to put in some good synthetic oil, I wouldnt buy it at Wal-Mart! YOUR TRUCK IS BETTER THAN THAT!

That's just it, it may be a good oil just rebranded and sold cheaper by WalMart. I'm using Mobil1 now and am always looking for a bargain, as long as I don't have to sacrifice quality!

Thanks again for any info anyone has!

Why not... Hell I use Tech 2000 oil in my dak, goes in clean comes out clean after 3k... well dark but still with a lot of body left to it... and cleaner than any other oil comes out...

Hell I worked in a grocery store for years and ocassionally we got to see who makes the store brand stuff... the difference in cost is all in the advertising, $2million on one product or on a store chain....

My concern with the store brand stuff would be that maybe Mobil is the manufacturer today, but who will it be next month... or the month after that? You just never know.

What I saw in the grocery store is that they do not change suppliers often due to packaging issues.

So, now the question is, is Quaker State Synthetic a good oil or just reformulated dino oil?

Any Quaker State oil is no good! Over time, sludge builds in your engine. The only Wal-Mart brand oil I buy is the TCW-III, 2 stroke oil for my boat.

Wal-Mart has a sale right now. 5 quart bottle of Castrol Syntec for $15 bucks.
That is a great price!!!

The following brands of "synthetic" are not realy synthetic at all: Quaker State Synthetic, Penzoil Synthetic, Valvoline Synthetic, Tech 2000,Rotella Synthetic,Castrol Syntec. All of these brands use hydrocraked dino oil. The stick the refined oil in a huge tank and expose it to extreeme tempetures and pressures to crack the wax once dewaxed these oil are alot better then regular refined oil but they are not as good as true synthetics!!!!! It is funny that they are putting your oil through the same enviroment that it would see in a race engine and then filtering it putting additives in it and calling it synthetic. They even have the nerve to charge you the same price as a real synthetic oil. P.S. THeir are other oils that claim to be synthetic and are not but I do not have a list of them. In the old days Hydrocracked oils were marketed as "Prmeium Oils". I officaly ran out of Mobile 1 today so I will be useing Amsoil from here on out! It took me a year and a half of changeing oil in two vechiles to use up all of my stock pile. i even gave cases of Mobil 1 away to family for their vechiles to try and use it up faster.

Thanks for all the good info!

Right now I think I'll stay with Mobil 1 as I can get it for about 3.50/qt at WalMart. I'd like to switch to AMSOIL but just can't seem to justify the cost.

Ive used Mobil 1 in every vehicle Ive owned. Amsoil hasnt proven anything, except they like to keep the "distribution" on a mom & pop level and the prices high.
Why do you think Corvettes come with Mobil 1 from the factory?
Ive done 2 oil sample testings on my personal vehicles. One vehicle, a Chrysler T&C with 120,000 miles, has proven to be a useful test mule.
Took 3 samples at selected intervals on the van. I took the first sample straight from the bottle. The 2nd was at 7000 miles on the oil change, then the 3rd at 15000 miles. (Oil was changed at 15000 mile intervals.)
Guess what? At the 7000 mile mark, the oil showed less than 10% viscosity loss as compared to the initial sample. The 3rd sample showed 15% viscosity loss at the 15000 mile interval. Also note, that the filter was changed at the 7000mile mark. The only oil added was enough to "prime" the new filter media. (~5 oz)

Well worth the $25 sample cost!

Wal-Mart states that its made by Pennzoil-Quaker State. Actually, it's from Specialty Petroleum a Quaker State blending plant.Sandman is correct in his statement "hydrocraked dino oil".

As for at the statement "Why do you think Corvettes come with Mobil 1 from the factory?" from TurboBlew, we have all seen the discussion on this on many threads so I won't go into the facts of loss leader low bid marketing. This comment does not infer that I am discrediting Mobil.

As to whether or not you should use this oil ... if you are going to use a hydrocracked dino oil there are better alternatives than a product produced by Quaker State. FYI - There are other threads with posts by Dakota owners and their experiences with Quaker State.
