the code 12 happened because you disconnected the battery. it is nothing that will hurt your truck. it will eventually go away.

EGR valve location

Message:
Where is the EGR valve. I have a 96 dak 5.2l I was told that the reason my truck idles really rough and almost stalls at lights I have to clean or change the EGR Valve. It should be at the back of the engine around the distibutor. I have bought a new valve and nothing in my engine bay looks like this baby. I even have a Haynes service manual not any help, because shows mostly 4-6 cyl pics. I the area I was told to look I can find a steel block off plate on the manifold that it the same size/shape as the new EGR valve that I bought from the Dodge dealship.

THe easiest way to find the EGR is to find the EGR tube on the passenger side manifold and trace it to the intake. The valve is right around there. It is going to be hard to see. Makes me glad I have the M1 so when I change the EGR it should be much easier.

Code 32 has 2 meanings. EGR malfunction, not what the problem is in your case. Air/fuel ratio out of proportion. This is what has happened to you. I know because that what happened to me with my 94 Dakota( duals with 2 inch exhaust, super turbo mufflers, and 2 1/4 inch tailpipes). The truck is running in a lean condition now. Don't replace the egr valve. There is nothing wrong with it. The way I fixed the problem is hard to duplicate. You can try it of course. Get a friend to rev the engine while you unplug and plug back up the throttle position sensor over and over again. You need to let the engine rev from 3000 to 5000. What you are trying to accomplish is to trick the computer into disregarding the throttle position sensor and get the computer to go into limp mode. It will then read primarily off the map sensor. If you are successful, the check engine light will go off and the air/fuel ratio will be corrected. It worked for me. I am not saying it will work for you. The throttle position sensor has to be connected and disconnected very quickly. The computer will go into limp mode when it determines that the information recieved from the throttle position sensor is faulty. Do not install larger injectors. Probably yor best bet is to get the computer reflashed. The people I contacted don't seem to know how to correct the problem or don't want to help. I can get the number to the person that seemed most helpful to me and it give it to you. I was trying to see who would reflash the computer when I got ready to remove the cat. Remember, you can always put some Flowmasters on and the code 32 will go away. I have seen it happen on more than 1 occassion. If you don't believe me try it. I don't know what it is about a Flowmaster whether they don't flow as good as Dynomaxs(which is what I think)or what. I am not trying to offend anyone that that likes a Flowmaster. It is just my opinion. Some one on this post said that by relocating the MAT sensor from the manifold to a cooler location richened the engine enough to compensate for the lean condition. I don't know. I haven't tried it. I am on my second dakota and haven't taken the cat off yet. I am trying some other things bisides reflashing the computer. If you give me your e-mail address, I will let you know what I find out.

I have gone back to my dealer. I now know why the 96 dak is called a "crossover year". The dealer breakdown is listed for years 94-96, the problem is that a 96 DOES NOT have an EGR Valve. It has the same computer controlled system the 97 and up have.
I hope this saves some of the other 96 owners some time.
My dealer did not read the breakdown correctly because he showed me and it does not state that the 96 is different.

You can try B&G Chrysler Specialists(586-758-2003) or FP Electronics Performance(810-225-2700).
One of these two, I can't remember which, said that they might could reflash the computer for the lean condition. The person I talked to said he would have to check with someone else about it. I haven't called them back as of yet. Erik is right. 96 models don't have an egr. That was the first year they did away with it.
