The Autolites aren't doing a very good job in my truck either. Since I have installed them I have noticed more pinging than with the original Champion truck plugs. Usually my truck pings when the A/C is running. When the A/C is not being used, it will ping but not nearly as bad. I installed a 180 degree T-stat as well, but the only thing I have noticed with that is the truck doesn't run as hot as it used too. The K&N air filter by far has done the most. Just the air filter alone makes one heck of a sucking sound and did help increase the gas milage from 13.3 miles to the gallon to 14.9 if I am doing my math right.

I did move my IAT sensor as well and haven't really noticed any gain from that.

You asked.....I answered. :-)

Are you guys expecting a huge gain in HP with these mods? If you are, then you will definitely be disappointed. You would not be able to feel the 1-3 HP gains that are produced with these mods. These mods are generally for enhancing other mods, not to just function by themselves.

Bob W & others

Yes the 180* stat did run cooler, but after my truck would come up to temp. it would cough and sputter like it hadn't warmed up. It was so bad that once I stepped on it hard to pull out into traffic and it sounded like it backfired in the TB and almost died, not what you want to happen in the middle of traffic.

Tha Autolites were no better, the idle was great but as soon as I would step on it there was a stumble right off idle.

Dan, did you notice any negative results from your 180 t-stat, or did the engine temp just go down? I've got a t-stat, but I haven't installed it yet. Did you reinstall your stock t-stat? Would you say that going to the trouble of changing to the 180 is worth it? Thanks...

Dakota Dan- I have the same stuttering prob/backfiring in the TB right off the line once in a while also, the wierd part is it only does it now and then but mostly when its "cold" and all i've done is adjust my tps to .78-.80 roughly(it's kinda hard to do by yourself), and I have a homebrew intake, and deleted the spacer in the TB over the holes. And also i went down to the team machinist this evening and was gonna have TB spacer made it doesnt cost anything to have it made and i was wondering if its a help or a hinder. I read the archives and it seems like noone likes them on the R/T's but i dont understand how it can hurt anything.

Still a little new guys help me out. I am really worried about the backfiring in the TB.

On my 99 3.9L RC 4x4 I had a Jet Stage II chip, 180 t-stat, Flowmaster cat back dual side exit exhaust and the Jacobs Energy Team(HO coil, computer, wires) that set me back over $900 for all and installed by myself.

Jacobs- Spent many nights removing and regapping plugs trying to find a gap that worked best only to end up with a more cluttered engine bay and only slightly improved idle and a need to change plugs every 6K due to excessive electrode wear from high output coil that caused really rough idle and decreased mpg:( My gas mileage did not change with fresh plugs and no noticeable seat-of-the-pants improvement as much as I wanted to believe it did after laying out $550 beans.

Jet Stage II- paperweight, no change in performance, gas mileage decreased from stepping on gas trying to find some better performance.

Flowmaster- lost gas mileage and low end torque but sounded cool(K&N FIPK may have made this mod worth the money).

I removed all mods a couple days prior to trading my Dak in for my current Dak and notice the truck actually ran better and more "pep". Sold the parts for half what I paid for it, my ass is still sore from that waste of hard earned money. Guess I should have known better than try to make V-8 power out of a V-6 without jumping into a turbo first. Either way I couldn't be happier with my 4.7 from stock to the mods done so far have only improved performance but also decreased mpg, small price to pay for miles of smiles.

Hopefully my wasted money wisdom will save another 3.9L Dak owner.

hey big_torque,
If possible could I talk you into sending me a pic of the turtle? I have been trying to understand this part and was considering making one, but it's kind of hard to do when I have no clue what it looks like or exactly how it works.

I found one today actually. Racing harnesses do not fit our trucks because the bucket seats have the built-in headrests. That was kind of a disappointment to me. I guess now I got to find some aftermarket seats or a set from another vehicle.

DaveR- Yellow paint only increases horse power if the correct stickers are applied to it.

Wider tires were no help at the drag strip. Tire compound is what counts.

Guy's

The Autolites I run for 500+ miles and the 180* stat I left in for 300+ miles.

When I removed the plugs and put the champions back in the truck returned to it's normal self.

Same with the 180* stat after I pulled it out the truck hasn't backfired yet.

I'm not looking for BIG HP out of these little mods. but I sure didn't expect them to make things run worse.

Sounds like the regualar mods are pretty much trial and error and only work for some people and not others.

I did the thermo change and notice my 4.7 running cooler and no other problems.

Did the switch over to the Autolites and haven't noticed any problems.

Relocated the IAT to the airbox just before it attaches to the TB and no problems there either.

About the only real difference I DO notice is that my truck seems a li'l peppier and I see 2-3 more mph on I-95 when going/coming from work.

If simple mods like these gained any significant HP then we wouldn't need NOS, Turbo's or Superchargers now would we?
