Subject: front end Clunking sound IP: Logged
Message: 2002 4.7 reg cab-
Since new, every time I come off the highway, and make a left or right turn, I hear a clunk coming from the front end. Sounds like there is a steel ball hanging from a string that swings and hits the floor board everytime I turn..
Has anyone had this?? or figured out what it is?

Message: My 98 did that too - it turned out the front A-arm was loose. AFter I convenced the dealership there really was something wrong with it, they fixxed it, but I had to work to prove there was something wrong.

Message: Look behind one of you front tires. You will see an upper and lower "A arm" with the coil spring in the middle.

Message: Dealer quote, "Per DC specs, we don't find anything wrong with your front-end(no torn ball joint boots), the clunking is mostly normal on Dakotas and does not effect driveability but bring it back if you notice any torn bj boots or abnormal tire wear(too late at that point)". Yeah I appreciated hearing that diagnosis after buying a truck that stickered at almost $26K with only 16K on the odometer. I have checked the front-end myself and made sure all bolts are tight. I noticed that the a-arm bushings are totally dry rotted and cracked. I sure hope the next gen Daks fix this and the other "live with" problems. I guess I am a Dak fanatic so I'll still buy a next gen Dak and hope that Energy Suspension makes urethane bushings and Moog makes ball joints to replace the crappy DC parts so I can be free of the common Dakota noises.
