Subject: using different oil! IP: Logged
Message: i have been using mobil 1 10w30 in my truck since i got it 31,000 miles ago. My brother got my dad some of that performance 15w50 mobile 1 for fathers day and noticed a 2 mpg increase over three tanks of gas... and noticed a better overall performance. Soooooo....... i went and bought some and just changed my oil. I use a bosch 3500 filter (ford filter, twice as big as our stock ones), filter relocator, and derale oil cooler. so far my truck likes it! i just wanted to recommend it to anyone wanting to try something different with performance in mind.

Message: I use the 15w50 in the summer and the 10w40 in the winter, Mobil1. It has always done me right and i can tell just by the way it runs, power wise, when it needs an oil change.

Message: I switched to Royal Purple 10w-30 in my trucks and have noticed a difference in performance and mileage.
I talked a guy I work with into getting it for his truck (02' Ram with 4.7L). He just recently went on a trip from here (Cedar Rapids, IA) to Texas and then to Arizona. He took the RP with him and changed it in Arizona for the drive back to compare mileage. He had Mobile 1 synthetic on the way down. He gained 1.8 miles per gallon on the trip back going the same speeds with Royal Purple 10w-30 over Mobile 1 of the same weight. I saw about the same gain just driving around town, but I wasn't sure because of how heavy the foot can be sometimes. My buddies 2500 miles trip is better evidence. I know there are a lot of die hard Amsoil guys on here, but I am sold on Royal Purple. I still think Mobile 1 is a great oil, now I think RP is a little better.

Message:
With the 15W-50 you are wasting horsepower and creating unwanted heat. You just do not need that thick of an oil for your engine. You might consider the Mobil 1 0W-40 or 10W-30, year round. They will work superbly and you will have a win/win with respect to fuel consumption, power, and operating temps.
Rule of thumb:
From what I've read , you should not deviate more or less than "10" above and below the mfg's recommendations. If they recommend 10w-30 --- don't deviate beyond 0w-40.

Message: Josh_KS,
its just their triangular shaped pro flo (or flo pro) series carb air cleaner... fits really nice on our 6 bangers but has a damned foam filter.
jon,
i will keep an eye on it. my dad has been using his for three or four months now on his LS1 and hasnt had any problems... plus i have an oil cooler and other goodies. our 85 van takes 20w50 oil... and trust me it needs it... poor old van
