Subject: What next? IP: Logged
Message: OK, I'm looking for my next mod. I can spend up to about $300. I have considered the following:
1. Jet Stage II
2. New exhaust
3. Modified TB
What do you think? What is the best bang for my buck with my current mods? I will probably end up doing all 3 of the above in time, but not right now.
Thanks,
Jason

Anyways, to answer your question, here's what I've figured the top three bang for the buck mods are for the 4.7L:
1) HO Cams ($73 USD each or something)
2) PCM Flash ($349-$500 USD depending on who does it)
3) Remove Cat or replace it with a high-flow one. (FREE - $200ish)
(and in that order too)
Without the free flowing cat, a cat back exhaust will get you next to nothing.
That's based on all the info I could collect from this and various other websites. Hope it helps!

Message: you have a 2000, so you're in good shape,
have mike leach flash your pcm, you may as
well take that $300 and use it as toilet paper if
you're considering buying the jet chip.

Message: What is the turn-around time to have the PCM flashed? If I went to a local performance shop would they know how to do it so that I wouldn't have to be without my truck for a few days?
Thanks for all the info,
Jason

Message: i have a question about the mike leach pcm flash. is this something that will have to change as you add mods? for example, if i flashed before buying exhaust would i have to have it reflashed after buying the exhaust? and also, if i reset the pcm will it erase the flash? im new to this computer business...i was going to buy exhaust next but im thinking the pcm thing might be the way to go...or the ho cams...but i fear tearing into the engine - especially since this is my daily driver....
sorry about the novel....just curious

Only if it's a major change ... e.g. if you had the flash for a stock engine, then put on exhaust, hi-flow cat, headers, intake, cams, and ported your heads .. you might need it re-flashed. For that, Leach charges $150 ($400 for the original flash). If you go turbo or S/C later, he'll only charge you the balance of the $650 it costs for the S/C flash
>and also, if i reset the pcm will it erase the flash?
No. But a dealer would have no troubles flashing the latest software update overtop of it, so be careful of them! (I think Leach will reflash you for free if that happens though)
-------------------
If you call Leach ... Talk to Tom (Tom Zimmer I think). He'd be the guy actually doing the flash.

Message: I am fairly mechanical, and I have the FSM, but I have never done quite a project like changing out the cams. How big of a project is this? Is this something that I should have someone else do for me? How long should I reasonably expect for this project to take?
Thanks,
Jason

Message: well I haven't done it yet, but I plan to .. the cams are on order.
Far as I can tell, it's pretty straight forward... it'll probably be a weekend project, but some guys who have done it before say they can do it in 2hrs ...
I've heard up to $500 for a mechanic to install (not worth it IMHO).
You'll need the chain wedge tool (or something fabricated to resemble it) .. I think some guys have some pictures of it around here.
