Subject: RE: Hesitation at Start up?? IP: Logged
Message: I have an original '96 Dakota 3.9 V6 Standard w/140K miles. Mostly original. My truck will startup and either idle ok or die horribly trying to idle. If you put any gear in it will immediately try to die. I have replaced plugs, wires, rotor, cap, distributor, oil, oil filter. Have already replaced timing chain and water pump 2 years into ownership. Now looking into sensors. Any help appreciated including location of sensors and most probable replacement order. (cheapest first?) Thanks.

Message: I had the same exact problem with my 1997 dakota with a 318v-8. It would idle rough and stall when first started up. It drove me nuts but I just lived with it for a few months.
One day the battery totally died. When I replaced the battery the problem went away!!! Never would have figured, but it solved the problem. It turns out the battery was weak. It had just enough juice to start the engine, but not enough to run the computer.
Hope this helps
