Subject: 3.9?????? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1994 dodge Dakota with a 3.9L engine. It is making some valve train noise and I was thinking about replacing the cam, lifters, and rocker arms. I was thinking that if I am going to go through all the trouble of the replacement I should put in a cam with a little more lift and duration. I can't seem to find any replacement cam for this engine though, even stock. Any suggestion on where to find affordable engine parts for the 3.9. I was also thinking of using a different ratio rocker with a stock cam but I only found a set that costs about $400, too expensive for just a 3.9. Lastly, does the 318 or 360 throttle body bolt right on to the 3.9? How do the 3.9s run with this TB?
Thanks,
John

Message: You'll have to wait for Bernd to answer about the cam and rockers for your engine. $400 sounds about right for roller rockers, though. The V8 TB tends to bog down the 3.9's. Don't know if changing your cam, valves, and roller rockers will alleviate that or not. What I would opt for is the new billet 48 mm TB by Flometrics.

Message: RonW,
Is this only for '94 3.9L? Bernd had recommended as a low cost solution to go with a stock V8 TB. He said this would perk up my 2001 3.9L vs stock. He mentioned that a V6 TB is about 42mm-44mm and the stock V8 TB is about 48mm. Bernd said the V8 will bolt on with no problems except for the linkage (disc stud vs ball stud).
JLK,
Wait for Bernd's wisdom on 3.9L engines to confirm RonW's advice and provide more on engine components. Sorry Ron, no offense.
That's my 2 cents.

Message: Okay, maybe I'm sticking my foot in where it doesn't belong, but Bernd's on vacation this week so I'll do my best.
The stock V8 TB's may be 48 mm in which case they are the same bore size as the new Flometrics 48 mm TB for the V6, however, I know for a fact that the Flometrics one flows much better. For sure Bernd will back me up on that.
As for the bogging, it may have been the Flometrics V8 or other aftermarket V8 TB's that were causing the bogging. Those TB's are at least 50 mm with some as big as 52 mm. That's just way more air than a V6 can handle without some serious headwork.

Message: I have a 95 Dak 3.9 and i use the V8 TB, i like it alot. top end it helped out ALOT, it helped bottom a little as well. It bogs slightly when punching it from idle, but after adding the IAT adjuster, elec fan, and underdrive crank pulley, i have no problem. My website is http://www.angelfire.com/la3/finedak
i have a list of mods on the modifications page, you'll have to scroll down to get to that link. the linkages were different for Bernd because he has a 97. I got my TB from a 94 318 and the linkage was the same. As long as you find a TB that is from 94-96 it should bolt on with no problem.

Nah...no foot in mouth Ron. ;)
The factory V8 TB is 48mm...but the Flometrics unit puts out about 10 more ft.lbs. of TQ and a few more ponies than the factory casting.
Ron and Daniel are also both correct with the throttle body linkage issues. Make sure it has the same type of linkage.
On the cam, we're out of luck for now. What you can do though is install a set of 1.7:1 Roller Rockers with a new factory cam for a little bit more lift...that's more HP as well.

Message: I have a 3.9l in my 99' dodge dakota and have a few questions about some mods I have done and am going to do... To start with here are the mods I have allready done...
COLD AIR INTAKE
HELIX BORE THROTTLE BODY SPACER
TORNADO
The things I have allready purchased and am going to put on it is a Holley 5.9l dual 52mm bores, and fuel chip... Will I have to worry about the bigger throttle body as far as bogging to what some on here are reporting when using the fuel chip??? Also I'm going to pull my heads and do a port and polish to them and the guy who is going to be helping me with this said since we were into it we would also shave about .015" off of the heads as well for a little more compression...
Now the next thing that came across my mind was since I'll have the heads off, how hard would it be to switch my rockers over to the 1.6:1's which is my understanding the largest ratio roller rockers you can use on this engine without having to tear out the oil baffles for the 1.7:1's... Who has the best roller rockers available and how much will they cost... $400 just seems like an alfull lot of money to put into an extra 5hp to me, but I would like to have that little bit of extra hp in the longer run...
Any advice on the best way to go here would be very appreciative:))
Thanks,
Greg

Not much viewable on the site as opposed to the catalog (was $5 when I got mine).
My catalog is at least 3 years old and even then they offered a V6 billet-steel cam good for 20hp/22lbs torque with a powerband from 1500-5200 with 6200 rpm max. The kicker is, if you wanted even more, the 1.7's are still an option to boost your cam specs. The cam works with stock springs, but if you did the 1.7's too, you'd be wise to upgrade the springs.

Message: Ok, I went to the fastdodge.com website, but I couldn't click on anything to access any of the parts listings... I went to the 3.9 section only to find two question and answers then went to performance section, then thought to myself now I'm getting somewhere, only to not be able to click on anything...
Is this a mainly got to order the catalog to see anything type of bussiness??? Also do they offer a set of headers for the 3.9... It's my understanding that jba is the only company that offers headers for the 3.9, but they also want $800 for the uncoated ones!!!
I'm interrested in the camshaft and roller rocker combo... How much does the cam along with roller rockers and springs cost exactly???
Does anyone offer a 6 speed manual to replace the junk 5 speed in these trucks??? Mines about completely shot now :(( I figured while I was at it I might as well replace it as well... It just rattles all of the time like something is coming loose and is getting hard to put into 1st, 2nd, and 3rd and that's trying to put it into these gears very easily... I think all my bearings or atleast most along with my syncros are just about shot...
Again Thanks to all who respond to this,
Greg

Message: Well I toldja there wasn't much to see. I mentioned this to them back when I ordered my catalog, but they don't seem too concerned with that aspect of the site. They must know something though. They have a recipe for an 11 second Dakota. It runs 12.70's without a blower or spray, and 11.20's with both. That's with a 318. Anyway, my old catalog had the billet cam and rockers for the same prices I'd seen elsewhere, but this was at least 3 years ago. Billet cam was $389. Rocker kit was $349. No headers listed.
Go here for 5/6-speed sticks. And they do have stuff to see and info. Also an online store. Good stuff, but just make sure you're sitting down. It ain't cheap.

Message: Well, if I had $4500 and was willing to spend it on that, I'de be more than happy to buy that tranny for my truck... I think I'll just wait and see what dodge has to say about my options as far as the tranny's goes... I think I'll have to wait and see about the rockers and cam as well...
Thanks Again,
Greg
