I took my truck out to the California dragway yesterday to run some quarter miles runs. I have a 2000 club cab with the 4.7 and 3.55 gears. My mods are gibson 3inch single outlet, airraid intake with custom 3inch pipe removing that removes the airhat, autolite 3923's, robert shaw 180t stat, I am running 19inch wheels with 285's in the rear and 255 in the front. I took off my toneau cover and tail gate. I ran 16.17 at 83 with a 2.4 60ft. My my stock acr neon race that. Why is is so slow...the truck seems like it runs stronger than that...i though it would run between 15.5 and 15 flat. What do you think?

Is it true that running with the tailgate on provides less drag???...I read somewhere that these pickup truck beds create an airpocket (when the tailgate is shut), which would allow all other air to float right over the entire bed and tailgate. Ever put a piece of paper in the bed and drive down the street and see it float straight up and down??? hmmm, im not sure what im talking about, but i remember reading this somwhere.

Tonneau covers help reduce the drag created by the tailgate. Ive had paper blow out the back frequently. The air pushes off the tailgate and up agaist the back side of the cab. You'll noitce in the autumn that all the leaves are pushed against the front of the bed, thats why.

ACTUALLY i read an article somewhere that the dakotas where designed in a wind tunnel as all dodge vechicles are. The design provides air smooth air flow around the truck and so there is no need to drive with the tailgate down to provide less drag.

You need to leave the tailgate on, but down, OR you need to leave the tonneau cover on (preferrably a soft tonneau since it's lighter).

The 2.4 60' time sucks balls and tells me that you are spinning like all hell coming out of the hole. You need to ditch the 19" wheels in the rear because the sidewalls on the tires you have are hard as a rock. You need to buy a spare set of 15" wheels and mount up some street tires or some sticky slicks on those 15's and that will help tremendously.

After that, you need to ditch the 19" front wheels because those are heavy as hell (just like the rear ones). The less rotating mass you have (ie- wheels & tires) the quicker the vehicle goes. If you've ever picked up an aluminum 15" wheel with a racing slick on it, and then picked up your 19" wheel/tire combo, you'll understand what I mean. it makes a huge difference.

PS- even with traction, I wouldn't expect those mods to get you any faster than 15.8's at 85-87 mph. It will also go a bit faster once it cools down from summer.

Dont feel bad , I did a best 15.48 @ 88mph my first couple times out with my 99 reg cab R/T. And I had a bunch of mods. Headers , cat back , throttle body , K&N , Jet chip (15.01 without Jet chip). 60` times were 2.2s on stock RSA`s. I was VERY disappointed. It always feels faster than you think.

dude, you had way more extra weight than me,
and I only ran a 16.03 that day. it was the lack
of traction and our sh!te 3.55 gears and open
diff ; ) I had 2.8 60 foot times !

BTW, I had the lowered black club cab.

just be thankful you don't live in colorado. I have a 2001 4.7 reg cab w/ 3.55 gears, an intake and flowmaster exhaust and I ran a 16.9 a couple months ago, but that was also at 5,000 ft above sea level.

Man , I thought my '99 Dakota CC was slow when it was stock , it's a 318 with A500 and 3.55 open diff , toneau cover , speaker box , 4300# with driver and was running 15.7's@88mph in the 1/4. I have since added an M1 and have went from running 10.10's in the 1/8 to running 9.8's now. I'm going to try to get back to the 1/4 but it's 75 miles from my house and I have an 1/8 mile strip 18 miles from my house so I have been running there mostly.

BTW - my 60' times suck also , lately 2.28-2.32's are the norm on street tires.

mopar joe...I run consistent 9.8's in the 1/8th, I
think it was just a bad track, cause 9.8's
should be 15.3's, and I was at 16.03 and
16.08.

Thank God I finally found people with actual timeslips to their credit. 2002 Quad Cab with 4.7 ran 16.3 first time to track. After 3 inch Flowmaster exhaust, K N filter, 295/50 tires ran 15.85 @ 85 mph. Also removed passenger side radiator flap. Finally, said to hell with it and bought a 1984 Camaro with 383 stroker that ran 11.96 @ 115 mph. Now that's fast! Made my knees shake!

My stock 2001 5.9 R/T ran 15.4 in the 1/4 mile. My first run when my engine was cold produced a 15.1 but after that solid 15.4's. Is this average, worse or better for an 01?

Lots of factors make or break an et ae the strip. Dont be upset rather try again. Rember the basics of racing such as, weather, the hotter it is the slower you run. Traction, 15 inch tires with a lot of side wall will hook better than 17 inch with no side wall even if 17 inch are wider. Taller tires cut back the gear ratio thus slower down the track. Also 3 inch exhaust kills bottom end tork, it adds hp but verry little. 180 stat should be replaced with 160 stat, cooler is always better.Want to really make it go faster change the gear to 4:10. Tailgate down or off is best. I ran my 1993 dakota 5.2 liter at 14:80 in the quarter with bolt ons and then into the 12:60 range with nos and a progressive unit. It was an automatic with 12.5 inch micky tompson cheeter slicks. My brother in law ran his 2001 dakota to 15.2 range with just bolt ons and a 5 speed and nitto drag tires. My new dakota 1996 is getting a 360 stroker and runs a blower and nos when i get together ill let you guys know.
