Is there a big difference between the two?

Also, are there any recommendations/ brands to NOT use?

I got the 3.55 open on my 4.7 now, and yesterday was my first rainy day to drive. I had a BAD spinning out problem, and also hydroplaned into a flooded median between freeway lanes. I know limited slip won't help with the hydroplaning but with the other stuff it will, plus I would just like to have it..

I was lookin at the powertrax no-slip for rear open axle, any comments on this?

Also, how hard are they to install? It says on the site anyone with basic mechanic skills can do it in a few hours, but something about that just doesn't seem right to me...

By "spinning out" do you mean fishtailing? Because a lsd will make that worse. Instead of the truck sliding out when you make lefts it will also slide when you make rights. I have problems when starting from a stand still on a slight hill. the pass side tire spins at the slightest hint of hitting the gas. A lsd would help ya there.

I was supposed to have my powertrax installed but they couldn't do it because I'm runnin open. I believe they said I needed limited slip (different casing?) to be able to install it. I can't remember what they told me exactly. I don't really know squat when it comes to axles so if someone who knows what I'm trying to say, feel free to chime in. As for the installation, everyone that I've talked to has said that their easy to install.

It is really easy to install and I think that powertrax provides some of the best instructions I have seen for anything. Everything goes together fairly smoothly and it took me just over an hour, not including letting the RTV dry.

Jim is right, a LSD will only hurt the situation you spoke of.
With open rears one tire spinning the other is still making proper contact with the pavement and keeping you somewhat straight in low traction situations. LSD will actually make both loose traction and "fishtail" which is a hard enough to handle but pickups make it worse.

LSD is for straight line traction for racing applications because both rear wheels are trying to hook up not just one.

BORN2STEEL21,

The POWERTRAX UNIT is made to be directly dropped in an open diff. Thier web site www.powertrax.com says it can be used in a LSD.

"Limited-slip/posi and centrifugally activated differentials can be as easily upgraded with a Powertrax No-Slip Traction System as can open differentials. When upgrading a limited-slip/posi differential, it is only necessary to remove preload springs before removing the spider gears, and to remove the friction plates after removing the side gears. For centrifugally activated differential upgrades, it is necessary to remove the governor counter weight and tumbler assembly before removing the spider gears (GM Gov-Lock). Powertrax provides a special tool with each centrifugally activated differential model that easily facilitates this step."

I'm not worried so much about the turns, so far I think I've only had one situation at all with fishtailing, it was on this past thursday, the same day I hydroplaned into a ditch. My question concerns straight line acceleration. Turning hasn't been a problem because I take my turns EASY, but I like to accelerate hard, that same fateful thursday with my open diff, when I finally got pulled out of the big puddle I was stuck in, I was sittin in the right shoulder of the freeway, I signaled for my mom to go first (she couldn't see what was coming cuz of my truck) then when I had a chance, I tried to go, I could not for the life of my catch enough traction to go. Only way I could was to wait for a HUGE opening in traffic where I could accelerate like a grandma, I ended up sittin there a while waiting..

Not to mention I jus tlike to accelerate hard sometimes, and LSD is something I've been planning for a while.

Also, the powertrax listings on truckperformance have a seperate kit for "chrystler 9.25" rear axles with OPEN differential" and "with LIMITED-SLIP differential", maybe that's part of born2steel's problem?

Also one more thing, it says it's only for the 9.25" chrysler's with ROUND differential case, my 4.7L's is an octogon, are they considering that round since it is a symmetrical shape or do they really mean ROUND?

I have the Powertrax in my '01 QC 4x4 which was an open diff, it took me 1.5hrs to put in, very simple, but if you have lsd, you have to take the carrier out to install it, a buddy with a Durango did it with lsd and it cost him a bundle, it had to go to a diff shop to do this, they had to remove the diff carrier to get the lsd out to install the Powertrax then reset the lash, etc. When you're putting it in, it's simple, like putting a puzzle together, all pieces go in only one way, and they're marked. Don't worry, just do it!! I do have a tip, before you put the spacers inside the carrier, coat the parts with bearing grease to hold them together while you install the other side, this will save lots of aggravation!! I've done this twice, my Dak and on my buddy Dave and Sally's Durango, both had open diffs, so if you have any questions, drop me a line and I'll help ya out!!

Ed, how mechanically inclined were you when you installed those? :D

What about the differential case, they say on the site For use with 9.25" round differential cases, is there actually a 9.25" ROUND one? Mine is octagonal..

I've been around cars all of my life, but not so much since '97, but seriously tho, it ain't that hard, but you MUST be able to read and comprehend drawings and directions, and be able to put pieces together ;) It only looks complicated man!!I haven't heard of a round case, all the 9.25" I've seen have been the stop sign looking one like ours.

Powertrax has really good tech support from the little bit i talked with them. They are very helpfull and tell you things that most other companies seem to leave out, like it takes about 100ft/lbs to unlock the unit.

Simple, do a small burn-out, one wheel spins, you have an open carrier. Two means posi, or you can look inside the glove box, there's a sticker with the options, it'll say all the options you got on it. HTH!!

Or you can jack up both sides of the rear and use your hand to turn one wheel, if the other spins in the opposite direction, you got open diff.

Which engine do you have?? Usually, the V8's have the 9.25", the sixers and less have the 8.25" The option sticker in the glove box will say, you can also look under, the 9.25 has a stop sign looking diff cover, the 8.25 looks kinda round, and if you look real good, there's a sticker on the axle tube that will say size, ratio, and if it has posi...
