Message: Ok, now that I know I can get a cold air intake (like a Z-tube with the 97+ airhat) I can't decide which one to go with?
1- Cold air intake (like Z-tube)
2- or an open air element like Sean Meldrums (from DML http://www.dakota-truck.net/UPGRADES/FABM/fabmdml.html).
Indecision, indecision.

Message: When I first swapped out my stock air box, I went with an open air filter. The results I saw were good initially. Then as the engine compartment heated up, the improvements decreased. During the summer months, my Dak was a dog with the open air filter. I installed a couple dryer ducts to vent outside air into the filter and that helped out a little, but I could still feel the decrease in hot weather.
Then I swapped the open air filter for my current setup. The performance loss during the hot months is still there, but no where as much as before. If I took time to wrap the tube, there would be no problem. Also, the throttle response is a lot better with the tube than with the open filter.
If you have a chance to get an open air filter cheaply, then try it. If I remember correctly '95 is OBD-I and you might have better luck with it. However, based on my experience, go with the tube.

Message: I like that a lot. I found a Mopar performance cold air intake P5007069 for sale but it is for 97+ models. I am assuming this will fit since the air hat fits the 95 TBs. I am definitely leaning to the air tube b/c I plan on getting headers but I have to find an air hat first.
What did you do to your air hat to paint it without cracking?

Message: If you're going to go with the Mopar intake, go with the K&N Gen 2. It's the same exact thing, but it's about $20 - $40 cheaper. Yes, the air hat on it will fit your TB. Any online performance place sells them. One thing I'm not sure of is is there enough room in the engine compartment for that style intake? I think there are a couple DML'ers running it on their pre '97, but I'm not positive of it. If your engine compartment is similar to mine it should fit.
As for the painting of the airhat, get some flexible, sandable primer. Dupli-Color or Plasti-Kote makes it and is good quality. I sanded my hat lightly with 220 grit sandpaper and thoroughly cleaned it with paint thinner. When it was dry, I applied a couple light coats of primer, lightly sanded/cleaned and then recoated with the primer. After that coat is dry, lightly sand & clean again and then apply the finish coat. Depending on the color paint you use it may take a couple coats. After you're done painting, you can apply a clear coat. I didn't though and haven't had any problems other than the paint wearing a bit under the hold-down screw.

Message: I looked at the underhood space again and I have quite a bit of room on the right front side, I don't have the taper that 97+ models do.
I was hoping to get a deal on the Mopar performance, is being sold by a second party.
I had one of the original FIPKs (bought in mid 1995) on my 92 Bronco. It was awesome. Thanks for the info, cold air it is.

Message: Hey intense, I did the exact same thing you did. I'm running a reflexxion cowl induction hood with it now as well as a K&N filter top so it draws air from the top. In answer to genIIs question, Intense is right. If your not planning on installing a hood scoop you should go with the cold air for performance. By the way, If your going to put headers on you either coat them or wrap them. There is no other way to go and your plug wires will love you.

Message: I just put a 14x3 setup from Intense Performance on my Dad's 95, 2wd, 318, 5 speed. It also include the open element top and it's a true 3" (not 2 1/2 like the FIPK). That and the MOPAR pcm have him chirping the tires at will. And it only cost $67 for the intake.

You can flow a lot more air with a 14x3 like this one. Yes, it's going to be warmer. But the volume of air makes up for it, IMHO
