i was wondering if there would be any difference performance wise or better gas milage if i used a drop in KN filter?

There might be a slight increase, but nothing noticeable. The filter is great, but the restriction comes from the airbox and all the 90° angles the incoming air has to take. I think the biggest advantage to using a K&N dropin filter is the fact that you can use it over and over by cleaning and re-oiling the cotton element.
