Subject: Best Electric Fan for 5.2 4x4 IP: Logged
Message: Im wanting to get a electric fan for my truck. I have seen a few different models for our trucks, but I want to know which one is the best all around.
I do offroad if that means anything.
And which one is going to work in stop and go traffic in the lovely Texas heat and humidity? Which one is going to have the most power and not drain my truck? I am wanting it to run when my truck is on. Also will I need to get the underdrive pulleys right away or can that wait?
Part #s will be appreciated if possible. And if anyone has a part # for the pulleys.
Thanks

Message: Spal Dual 11" fan should work.
They are supposed to keep our 318's cool
The only other option is the Black Magic 150 but it has had mixed results when it comes to the 318's. I don't think it would do the job offroad where you only have the fan to keep you cool at slow speeds.
BTW: What gears do you have in your truck and if thy aren't stock, how much did you pay to change them out?

Message: 4wDakota: Im still running the stock 3.55LSD. Its not what I want to use but I dont have the money right now. I will hopefully get some new gears in the next two months, Im supposed to get some money and I just hope it doesnt fall through like it did before.
Thanks for the input. Are you using that fan? If so do you have it wired to run while your truck is on?
I also need to take my truck in to get it checked, my truck runs hot when in stop and go traffic with the A/C on, and when I take off all I hear is reving with major loss of power. After it shifts gears it usually stops. This started happening in the last month or so. Any ideas whats wrong with it?

Message: Well the fan is kicking on to cool it down and once it gets up to speed it cools and kicks off. That's what your feeling.
I have the stock fan in mine. When its hot and the fan is engaged and the 3.55 gears and 33's it bogs down pretty good. I can't imagine 35's.
I had my radiator flushed @ 50K miles. I put new hoses on and a 180 degree thermostat (Robert Shaw) and it stays cooler.
I was going to put that fan on with my body lift but money has been tight and that fan is close to $300 which I just couldn't spend. You can get a thermostat control and set it to come on at 185 and/or come on when the AC is on. As much as the stock fan sucks I can't find an electric fan to match it's coolng ability. The advantage of the dual spals is surface area 2 11" fans cover more than 1 15" Black Magic. The shroud is also the size of our radiator to cool the entire thing. The stock fan is around 20 inches so it covers the most and the blades are huge.
If you haven't flushed your radiator and put a cooler thermostat, I'd do that first. Bigger gears will help too. In 2 months it will be cool enough to where my fan will rarely even come on so I won't worry about it until next summer.

Message: Thanks for the help 4wDakota: I do have a 180 thermostat in now and was hoping to flush the radiator this weekend. Now I understand the fan but why is it running hot?
Thanks again.

Message: I really don't know. Could be a dirty radiator, inside or outside dirty. Could also be tuning. If your truck is running too lean or even too rich it could make a big difference in temperature. Your engine is under a big load with those tires and 3.55 gears. With 4.10's or 4.56's it would strain less and also rev a little higher which in turn will pump more water through the system.
BTW: if you removed your fan shroud when you installed the body lift that will cause overheting too.
What prices have you been quoted for a front and rear gear swap?

Message: I had an Imperial fan and it could not cool my 5.2 properly.
I now run a Black Magic 150 as a puller along with a Flex-a-lite 110 on the front as a pusher and it cools well and I get 2 more mpg.

Message: Jesse: Yeah thats me, I should be at the meet this weekend, but Im kinda playing it by ear. I might go to visit my older brother which I havent seen in a while.
4wDakota: Thanks alot for all of you quick resonses and help. I still have the fan shroud on. Im going to flush the radiator and hopefully that will help. I did put some Autolite 3923's in about a month ago but it was still running a little hot before I did that. I can get 4.56 for around $560. So I think Ill be doing that.
Rascal: Thanks for the input. Do you have the flex-a-lite in front of you radiator? On the front side closest to the grill? How do you have them set up to run? And what about did it cost you?
Thanks again.
