Subject: about to buy. 4.10 open verse 3.92 lsd.
IP: Logged

Message:
currently I have the 3.55 open axle on my 2000 4.7liter. I was wondering which would probable yeild a faster time down the 1/4. I will eather get a set of 4.10 gears installed(650.00) or purchase a used 9-1/4 axle from a junk yard with 3.92 gears and a lsd.(750.00+100.00 shipping).
I wish I could afford to get a powertrax locker but I can't. and the price does not seem worth it to me eather. plus I have perfected the one wheel drive launch =p.

all opinions welcome.

If you get 4.10s with a open diff you will just smoke the tire and I mean one tire. 3.92 LSD is a good way to go. You have a auto right? 4.10 LSD would be perfect IMO.

thats what I was thinking but I don't think I can afford the lsd(or locker) with the 4.10 gears the only price I can find for the locker is 429.98(powertrax) from summit racing. is there another brand that might be cheaper.

4.10's cost a little over $200 here is the link :

and the powertrax no slip costs a little over
$400, a locker will run about $300 here is the

I'm sure thats not the cheapest place to
purchase, but its cheaper than buying a used
one from a junk yard.

D your forgetting install every were around here (7 diff places) has been giving me an estimate of 500.00 for the locker and 300.00-400.00 for the gears. with that included a junk yard axle is cheaper,or are these estimates rediculously high.

buy the parts seperate, and then just pay for
labor. if you check around, $400 for gears is
way to much, unless you have a super old
rear end that needs an installation kit for the
total rebuild. if it is newer, you wouldnt have to
buy the installation kit. the labor shouldnt be
too much. I have heard its a pretty install, I will
be doing mine pretty soon. remember, they
will mark up parts at least 50%. labor is one
thing, getting ripped off for parts is another.

check with 4wheelparts.com, they have some
pretty decent prices on parts.

how do you adjust tire ratios effect on gearing. my factory tire were 29inches tall and the one's I have now are 27. I tried using a basic porportion but I got 4.53 and that seems alot higher than what I have.

Now I'm thinking of getting just the locker to improve my traction and times.

A simple equation for finding out tire changes have on gearing: (new tire/old tire x rear gear= the result the new tires have on what the gearing feels like). To find the gear ratio required to fix the speedometer reading(old tires/new tires x stock rears= ideal ratio). If you are looking for better traction WWW.MANCINIRACING.COM HAS THE HEAVY DUTY AUBURN DIFF. FOR 9 1/4 REARS FOR $295. THEY HAVE GEARS FOR $200 EITHER 3.91 OR 4.10 MOTIVE GEAR BRAND.RICHMOND BRAND COST $295 FOR 3.91 OR $280 FOR 4.10 . GOOD LUCK WITH WHAT YOU CHOOSE TO DO!

If you originally spun 2000RPM@65MPH, then went to 29" to smaller 27" tires, you'll be spinning 2150. Going to a 3.92 from a 3.55 after that will give you 2375, a 4.10 will yeild about 2480RPM. To get back to the original RPM with the smaller tires you'd need a gear ratio of about 3.30.

Basic formula:
New RPM@given speed=Old RPM@given speed*(old tire/new tire)*(new gear/old gear)

I have 3:55s' in my 99 Dak and I've found rear gears for my 8.25 axel but I can't find a place that sells anything for the front of our trucks (Dana 35). Since my truck is a 4x4 I need to have gears that match. I want either 4:10s or 4:56s. Anyone know if a company makes anything for the front of our trucks?

4wheelparts.com has a real nice chart set up,
it tells you the gear ratio, and rpms @ 65mph.
it also lets you know if your mpg's will be

I also have a 27in diameter but I think I will get the 4.10 I fooled around on some calculators and it seemed to be the ideal selection.I think with are 3.55s the ratio with a 27in tire is like a 3.69 and with the 4.10s it would be like 4.2- and at 77mph the tach would be 3000.

99Dak5.2L4x4,

WWW.REIDERRACING.COM has what your looking for. They have reverse gears for dana 35's in ratios(3.55, 3.73, 4.10, 4.56, 5.13). Only thing is they don't have prices on thier site.

WWW.DRIVETRAIN.COM also have reverse dana 35 gear sets (3.27, 3.55, 3.73, 4.10) for around $230. Both sites have different types of limited slips, lockers and ARB's air lockers.

I also want to change my ratio's. I am going to add some performance mods and want the acceleration to be faster than stock. I have a 2002 4.7L Multi-speed auto 4X4 with the LSD. Any suggestions on which would be the best to get? I am aiming for the fastest 4X4 Dak in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

CW,

YOu wrote that the open diff would only power one tire? I thought the the open put the same power to both wheels in a straight line, as opposed to the LSd, which only gets 15%.

Which makes me go 'hhhmmmmmm'

The few times I light the tires on my 01 QC 4.7 5spd, on flat, dry, clean cement streets, BOTH tires leave the same thick black mark in the street! If only 15% power to one rear wheel will do that, not bad. Makes you go HHHMMMM.

Open diffs only power the passenger rear tire in hi-po situations(BURNING OUT). Lsd units power both tires in astraight line to a certain extent. (if the driver rear gets a lot of traction the right rear will spin only) An example I saw when I was at the track, some camaros would start to burn-out and once the left rear tire got sticky it stop spinning and the right continued spinning. This has a lot to do with how worn the lsd is and if it is a stock replacement or a hi-po unit.
A locker powers both wheels evenly in a straight line.

well. after I cancalled the order the locker camein and I got it put in today. not bad at all on the street all I have to say is $#%@. now I power brake up to about 1500rpm let go of the brake and drop it. get eather a bark from the tires or light wheel hop. honestly I need a little more spin for good acceleration. added tons to my launch normally in the same situation I would have burnt the back right tire all the way through 1st gear.
