since you work at a dealer, you are the first person who i though i shold ask.

how good are the NV3500's? i have had zero problems with mine, but i am putting on a supercharger with 6-9#'s of boost and i dont want it to fall apart.
i know duner has ran 12's with a couple of hundred passes on his 5 speed, but are they all that strong, or did he just get a good one?

how often do you get a bad manual tranny at the dealership?

manual trannys, aren't as weak as some think. As long as you don't act stupid with it you be ok, and what I mean by stupid is..while in gear and moving, floor it, let of, floor it let off. Dumping the clutch isn't the greatest thing for them either. unless you plan on making 5-600 hp I think you'll be all right.

There are not many around in my area but personaly I think they will handle the supercharger quite nicly. No power shifting with slicks though.;) It will live on the street very easily because you will never get enouph traction to hurt it. Does yours have the 8.25" rear? If it does I would be more worried about it than the trans. The 9.25" has proven quite reliable.

Granny Shifting.......
IP: Logged

Message:
I have been fairly "nice" to my transmission. I granny shift every gear while going down the track. (let off - shift - let the clutch back out - back in the throttle) I realize that I could probably get another couple of tenths out of it by shifting harder..... but since I'm well past the rated capacity of the transmission already, power shifting is out of the question. I used to power shift it when I was making less power.... it handled it just fine.

My launch technique is harder on the clutch than just dumping the clutch.... but it's easier on the trans. I do a "soft" release of the clutch. That means that I don't just side-step it off the line but release it at a controlled rate. The whole idea is to get the truck to squat in the rear by allowing the rear tires time to bite and get the truck moving instead of breaking the tires loose.

My plan is to go to a 6-speed in the not so distant future.....

yes i have the 9.25" rearend

thanks duner for the tips!! i would rather replace the clutch then the tranny. if/when you do the 6 speed, let us know how smooth the operation goes. i was thinking of the same thing if mine blows up.

I beleive that the NV3500 has been used in Dakotas, Rams, Jeeps and many of the GM trucks. It has MILLIONS of miles of proven reiability. Its MAX Input torque rating is 300ft-lb

Parts for it are relitivly inexpensive and there are bolt-on trannys that can handle more torque.
(NV3550 ?)

Here are a few websites that further describe the NV3500 and its predicessors.
