Subject: 180 or not? IP: Logged
Message: I mentioned to my parts guy that I wanted to put a 180 T-stat in my 3.9 as per the advice from this board. He said "not a good idea" because the emissions and other systems are designed to run at 195 and won't run properly at the lower temp.
Any opinions on this advice?

Message: At 195 degrees the engine will run cleaner however it doesn't do your performance any good. A cooler engine will run MO BETTER! What do you want a cleaner engine or faster one? You will not fail any emissions test with the 180.

Message: Your engine may not feel faster but it will run smoother. Mine does. Get the 180

Message: I use the 180 in both my Daks with the 4.7 engines, I am glad I installed them, runs way better.

Message: I heard a engine running 10 degrees cooler can make it last much longer before a rebuild is necessary. A above post just said "At 195 degrees the engine will run cleaner" ....
so does that mean running at 180 WILL NOT EXTEND ENGINE LIFE?

Message: Well, I just recently put a 165 in my 3.9 and it will not go above the first line. I'll be putting a 180 soon, but, damn, I never thought it would get that cool.

Message: Just A quick thought, running your engine at 190 will run cleaner, but would you be sacrificing the oil viscosity (sp)due to the high engine temp ? And would you be putting an extra strain on the cooling system. VS. running the 180 tstat?
