Does anyone know what the part # is or description is for a crankcase vent filter from K&N is? It's going to go on a 99 Dakota R/T 5.9 with the stock valve covers.

Thanks

I used one of the chrome topped ones from APC. You can get them at AutoZone, or Canadian Tire. They're rubber ended and universal, so they will fit your valve cover.

I've never had any trouble. Here is mine. We have to have a PVC filter on up here in Canada so I just stuck it on the end. My Texan friend Zaurusman put his directly on the valve cover. Essentially, I just wanted to do away with the ugly hose that ran from the cover to the air hat. You can plug the hole in the hat with a rubber grommet.

I just checked on my newest toy... a 98 360, and if yours is the same it would fit no problem.

I have a K&N as well. I'll get the part number off it in the morning. I put one on when I changed air intakes, since the one i put on had no provisions for a PCV system. This was fine with me since it just spits warm air and oil into the intake anyway.

You know what? I think it's possible. I powerwashed mine a couple of weeks ago. I have never run into problems before, but I usually cover anything vulnerable with plastic bags and I didn't this time. I fouled 2 plugs on the side with the breather, the only explanation I can think of is that water or engine shampoo got in there. It was pretty horrible driving it with only one piston going on the one side to get it fixed.

Why would you folks want to introduce an unmetered air source into your engine? Have any of you thought about it from that aspect?

LOL!!! That's what I was thinking.
How does that differ from a filtered intake?
Before I installed the crank filter, there was a hose leading directly into that.

Evidently you guys haven't thought of that, but now that I think about it more, it's only going to affect my engine (SOHC) and not yours with the pushrods. So I guess next time I'll read your signatures a little more carefully before I post. Sorry to cause confusion...

I bought a package of various sizes from Canadian Tire. I have also seen them at PartsSource in Oshawa. There is a whole line of small auto-fixit products, all with red packaging with "HELP" in white letters on it :)

Hey DemonDakota, Can you explain why a breather on the valve cover on a pushrod engine is ok, but not on a SOHC. I understand the fact that it is unmetered because it is not going through the MAS, but whats the difference between the 2 that makes it work fine on the pushrod engine. thanks for the help

It has no effect all engines are metered at the PCV valve, not the filtered end.

I would only put the filter on the valve cover with the hose going to the airhat. You shoudl really leave the valve cover with the PCV valve hooked to the manifold so you can keep the positive crankcase pressure. I've got a blue one from APC on my R/T. $8 at Autozone and it fit right onto the factory plastic elbow on the valve cover. If you go 4x4in in water, I wouldn't recomend it since there is a really good chance you coudl get water in through it and possibly damage the engine. There shouldn't be any reason why you can't do it on the 4.7 or any OHC engine.
