Subject: RS 180 t-stat malfunctioning? IP: Logged
Message: Sport Plus QC 5.9L 4X4 auto. up in Canada eh...
We are having some 85 to 90 F days up here and I'm noticing my temp gauge reaching 190 to 195 F when I'm stuck in traffic. On the highway it maintains 175 to 185 F even while in tow.
Should I be this suspicious and paranoid with my Robert Shaw? Tell me it's normal so I can focus on enjoying my weekend beer buzz.

Message: In traffic? Thats normal. The radiator becomes less efficent when your not moving a lot of air through it. The fan can only move so much, driving speeds move a lot more.

Message: mine does the same thing. the problem is that the clutch on the fan doesn't engage until about 200 which will work fine for the stock 195 stat. once you put the 180 in it the fan still doesn't engage until around 200 degrees so in traffic it will go up to about 210 until the fan engages and cools it back down. i've tried both an electric fan and a flex fan to keep it at 180 in traffic but neither one worked for me. i'm going to try using both of them together and see if that will keep it cool in town.

Message: A 180 t-stat doesn't keep the engine at 180. The rating on a t-stat is the temp that it opens and alows the coolant to flow. Even if you take out the t-stat it will run hot in traffic.

Message: Thanks guys!
Looks like I'm in the clear(knock on wood)!
On a side note, went bass'n on Saturday and did pretty good. It's great knowing that while even in tow the engine is running cooler and comfy. I feel for my baby!
Keep on truck'n!
