Subject: M-1 Vs. 1.7 Roller Rockers

In a 97 with the 318. What would be a better mod?

Just making sure I do this in the right order, before I order the M-1. But my checks cleared yesterday so I have some cash now.

Or put this way what order would you mod your truck after an exhaust?

Thanks

1.7,s 1st. The M1 2bbl should be the last mod for a 5.2. Well, the last mod before a supercharger.

Would a good strong low to midrange cam with the stock 1.6 be a better idea? Or just use the stock cam with 1.7 rockers?

With the proper sized throttle body, the M1 is just fine on the 5.2L. Both combined would give you quite a bit more power on the mid to top-end range.

On the cam question, it depends on how many miles are on the engine. Swapping out a cam on a high mileage engine (70K+) isn't wise as it will put more stress on the valvetrain...that's already starting to get tired. On the cam/1.6 vs. stock/1.7 comparison...it depends on application. The 1.7's on a stock cam are good for about 15-18HP and no engine teardown required. New cam + lifters + rockers + gaskets + teardown time is quite a job for the average home mechanic (although there's quite a few of us with plenty of tools and time to do it at the house).

bernd, i have 80k on my engine, and im thinking of putting the mopar valve springs in (i already have them). do you think this will put too much stress on the valve train?

i only plan on spining the engine to 5200 rpm (because of the limiter).

i am also putting a blower with 6#'s of boost and felpro gaskets on at the same time. do you think i will see any problems?

I knew waiting to order the parts would have some advantages. I think I'm going to stick the M-1 on the back burner as I don't think it'll help me as much with my truck as is.

So I think I will order the FIPK and a new throttle body...probbaly from Bernd. I'm going to look into 50 or 52 mm. I beleive I will probbaly go with the APS, as I can't find a way to justify the added cost of the F&B.

After these would the rockers be worthwhile? Or perhaps a new exhaust? Mine is starting to rust. Headers would go with a new exhaust I think.

If you add the M1, TB and RR you will need headers to get the air out. Otherwise you will have a constipated engine.

Before you discount the F&B, remember-- if you keep your stock TB, you're looking at a core charge (which puts you in the same price range as an F&B, if not more). If you turn around the sell your core (for about $100 usually)... Then you're only looking at a $50.00 difference max, for completely custom piece.

Email me and I can work a deal on a 50mm for ya.

the K&N didnt do much for torque, but my tb helped some. i have the magnum performance tb, and it has some "power slot" crap in it that is sopose to help with the torque.

Kota: If you're only spinning the engine to 5000rpm (or shifting at 5200rpm)...the stock springs will handle the 6# boost and the higher RPM's (even with the 1.7:1 rollers). If you plan on running 9# or higher and plan on spinning the engine to a higher RPM (5500+) there's several things you'll need:

(1) Different Camshaft (stock cam poops out at 4800-4900 anyway)
(2) Higher Performance Springs (check to make sure the springs match the cam though)
(3) Higher boost = Change/upgrade the head gaskets

At 80K miles though...i'd stick with just installing the 1.7:1 rollers (standard Crower kit). If you plan on running the higher boost, different cam, etc...think about freshening up the engine first (you may want to think about the PK kit from Crower as well if a rebuild is in the future for you).
