Subject: Twin-Turbo - R/T-2 is Alive!!
IP: Logged

Message:

R/T-2 took it's first (new) breaths today and fired up like a champ. A few minor adjustments to the oiling system (had to change the orifice restrictor sizes slightly) and some minor oil seepage (two fittings weren't quite tight enough)...and she spooled up. (God that sound was
COOL!!)

We've put a few new pics up on the web but keep in mind that they are still with some of the proto-type (or unfinished) parts. Once the final system checks and wiring harness has been built...she goes on the road to the dyno shop for A/F testing (and tuning) as well as some HP/TQ figures.

The reason more people aren't excited about it is because we have been reading about this for 6 months now. I won't be excited about anything until I see how much torque that thing makes on the dyno. Then I hope it kicks the crap out of a certain fake RT.

I was at the street races last weekend killin everyone there...took out numerous ricers, a Z28, 2 other R/T's...then I saw this twin turbo Supra pull in and I had already made 3 pulls and I asked him if he wanted to go...and he stood there and thought about it and he goes, hmm and he looks my truck up and down and he goes it might be tough but I'll try.

So we get set and both punch it and I kill him off the line but I can't help but see him in the corner of my eye...I can't describe how much power those twin turbos put out...in between shifts to when he gunned it I thought the whole freakin car was gonna do a wheel stand...I was like holy sh!t. We were even for about 1/8th then he pulled me past 70mph.

Seeing that supra get all that power I can't even imagine what its gonna do to that big V8...thats gonna be sweet!!!

Hehe, yeah, im curious to see how it does. I've been toying with the idea of maybe next summer trying to find an older R/T to play with. Probably wont happen cause i spend to much money on my 4.7, but it never hurts to dream right?

Glen,
Weren`t you talking about putting on a body lift a while back? If so, did you do it?
One more question...what do you think your KB charger did for your 0-60 and 1/4 mile times?
I`m still wrestling with the thought of getting one , I just don`t want to be dissapointed after such a big investment.
BTW , I have an `02 AWD QC SLT plus with the 4.7 and auto. , so any info. you can give would held me a bunch.

Sorry for so many questions..and thanks in advance.

Oh yea, as to the orig. post here...that twin turbo is going to sell like mad IMO !!! Sounds awesome.

Scott, I also have the AWD and I have wondered what it would do with a bit more HP. What is not clear to me is how the rating system that New Venture uses translates to HP and Torque capacity at the flywheel. The NV 242 (the manually actuated version of the NV 244 we have)has a torque capacity of 1486 lb-ft. Looking at other T-cases on the chart it looks to be on the light side. Thus, if I (or Scott) boost the 4.7 to say 300 hp will the T-case take it? JP

MikeD, I have a friend who has one with 800rwhp. They are capable of easily making over 750hp with the stock long block! Of course your starting costs on one of those cars is at least $15k++ for a high mileage used one. Dump another grand in it, and the car is capable of taking out lots of big $$ cars. It wouldnt be hard to spend $20k in mods on the particular car.
If you were beating him the 1st 1/8th mile, he either cant drive or the car was automatic.

Well it depends on how well you have the vehicle setup. Certainly my friend doesnt drive his car everyday, so 50k miles would last him a lifetime. He has close to $50k in the car already. ($28k purchase price + $22k in mods) Parts add up quick, like $4k for wheels ALONE, upgraded brakes, etc.
For what they are, Supras are the ultimate *ricer*. Every one that is in the junkyard is without motors and trans! My friend didnt want to get into the *hot rodding* scene as he calls it. He is kind of a priss like that...lol. Hes got money though...and thats what counts!! hehe
Besides, its not like hes making 800hp all the time, but you should see the look on smaller displacement motorcycles that cant shake him..lol.

Hey JOE E... Don't be a butthole to the V6 guys, not everbody on here can afford a v8 or can change what they have!!! Besides, Turbo 6 Buicks fare pretty well against some nasty v8's...

Awesome job Bernd!!!

I support any and all efforts to turbocharge just about anything.... and an R/T Dakota is a great thing to mess with.

I bet the torque curve will be out of this world in the mid-range... Especially with turbos, it should pull like a freight train when it shifts from 1 to 2 and 2 to 3, because the boost won't drop like a supercharger.

RTman, its called compression man! The Supras were setup from the factory with twin turbos, hence they have lower compression motors. You could run more boost, but you would have to go into the motor to use low comp pistons and oring the cylinders for better sealing. THen of course you may want to upgrade the cylinder studs, etc.

You start running big boost through a high compression motor and you'll either lift the heads and push out a gasket or hole a piston from detonation.
If you wanna run higher boost, build the motor towards that.

The head design and number/positions of the head bolts makes a big difference in how much boost an engine can handle... remember, the Supra engine was built to run boost from the start...

The twin turbo kit is capable of producing more than 8psi boost, but the engine's reliability would be drastically reduced... I should know, I designed it... :-)

Bernd's head gaskets were Fel-Pro... Perma-torque... the copper color is from the copper gasket spray that he puts on them...

For V-8's, I'd go with either the 1008 Fel-Pro or the SCE head gaskets... either should do fine.

I like the Mopar manifold gasket set...the front and rear gaskets are plastic and rubber, not cork...

Tom, Bernd...

What is this I hear about using shorter rods when your building an engine to de-stroke it to a lower displacement? From what I was told, this allows the engine to rev faster and produce more torque?

It certianly would lower the compression ratio, which would allow you to run higher boost to make up for it, but would it be a good idea I wonder?
