Subject: Duner, quick question about injectors. IP: Logged
Message: Hey man, i was reading yer posts over on the jeep forum, and i think that some of those Bosch injectors would be a good investment for my kenne-bell'd 4.7.
Did you have to upgrade the fuel pump, or put an inline pump in? Seems like with more flow, you'd need a better pump.
Damn, i was just thinkin, im gonna have to pull the kb to get the injectors out. So much work. :(
The only thing keeping me back from puttin the HO cams in and new injectors is the thought of taking off that supercharger. It was a pain to put it on, i dont want to do it again. Ah well, i guess you have to work for speed. :)

Message: I would definately change the injectors. I don't
think the stock pump will have any problems
keeping up with the injectors at all. I had to
add an additional pump to mine because I was
upping the fuel pressure with the FMU. I know it
will be a bunch of work to pull the blower off, so
you might as well do the cams at the same time!
hehehe

Message: Oh the blower also has 2 injectors on it, i forgot to mention that. So the stock pump should be able to handle the 8-24 lbs and the 2 on the kb? Im just tryin to get a good list so i know what i need to buy and what work needs to be done. I return line system seems like a great idea, but im not much of a 'build it from scratch' type of guy, so untill someone comes out with a kit i wont be doing that.
Thanks for the uber quick reply tho. :)

Message: I'm just curious, did your KB come with a boost-a-pump? Are you having detonation problems with the KB supercharger as delivered?

Message: Actually, i got a paper with my KB that said with the two additional injectors on the back of the blower, i didnt need a kb boost-a-pump. So i didnt get one. I really dont have any det. problems to say. Nothing really extreme, i've never seen the red lights on the knock sensor come on, and the only time it hits orange is when im hard in it going up an onramp or something. Im thinkin about the new injectors be cause it does seem a little lean at WOT (i have no way to test this but by the seat of my pants and the way she feels), and i've heard that the stock injectors are crap from a number of people.
One thing i've noticed, on some websites they claim the KB is a really quiet supercharger. Well, i've never actually heard another supercharger besides mine, but mine seems really loud. Its got some serious amounts of whine and it pulsates too. Wish i had a way to record it. My dad thinks its normal, but the only superchargers he's messed with are Whipples. Ah well, i just hope the 5.7 is out when my engine blows up. :)

Message: Maybe you could get some kind of air fuel ratio meter so you could know if you are running lean. Was the knock sensor included in the kb kit? Does it actually detect detonation, or does it just retard the timing at higher boost whether it is detonating or not? Sorry about all the questions but I'm thinking about getting the kb s/c for my truck. Thanks.

Message: Don't waste your time on an 02 gauge (air/fuel meter)
They are way too slow and inaccurate for tuning a supercharged/turbo'ed/ nitrous'ed engine of any kind.
I don't care how good a meter you buy... they are only for ballpark tuning, and really don't show enough information when you are tuning something that is on the edge like a 4.7L SC engine.
I would recommend that you buy an Exhaust Gas Temp gauge and probe assembly. You can buy several digital units that look like a FLUKE brand electronic Meter (big and cumbersome, but accurate). These usually cost somewhere around $300.00 for a good one that will last... Another good choice that is a little more daily driver friendly and good looking is an EGT (Exhaust Gas TEMP) gauge from Autometer. They are top quality and cost about $80-$130 for the different models, this cost does not include the K-Type thermocouple (about $80-$100.00 from autometer) that is required (this is the part that goes in the exhuast manifold-preferably very close to the head -where it will show with the highest readings and quickest movements.
To tune an engine with an EGT, you want to aim for approximately 1300 deg. F... which is actually a little fat, but it is a good starting point for a full-throttle-fully loaded run. Most engines will run very strong closer to the 1400 Deg. F mark... But a consideration for chamber efficiency, burn rate, injector size, and piston material must all be taken into consideration when tuning...These are general guidlines for temps... guys who have messed more with the 4.7L might be able to tell you exactly where a piston will melt or crack (more likely with Hypereutectics) as far as temperatures go.
This is very important to anyone who is doing a power boost of any kind on their 4.7L, really including cam, intake, heads, etc.
It is not only a danger indicator that is better than a dummy light (about what an 02 meter is on a high HP engine that tells you when your crap is broke, because it was way too slow to react to a suddenly changing conditon), but also the most important tuning aide you can buy...
Ok, I'm done preaching...
Hope this helps some of you guys who are wondering if you really need bigger injectors or a bigger fuel pump....
Just remember, what if your KB SC's extra two injectors stop working suddenly and you are left about 10-20% lean... You won't know unless you have an EGT meter.
Just a thought....
GOOD LUCK!!!!
Later,
Ryan

Message: Daammmn. Now that was some good info. Thanks for the advice. Im a pure newbie when it comes to forced induction. So advice is greatly appreciated.
