Subject: 4.7L HO cams/intake Dyno results +30hp IP: Logged
Message: I finally made it back to the Dyno after installing the HO cams and HO Intake.
My baseline numbers, prior to the HO install were 214 hp @ 4600rpm and 290 tq @ 3300 rpm.
The results, in my opinion were very impressive. While only making +15 peak HP, the increase from 4800 rpm to 5300 rpm ranged from +10 hp up to +31 hp !! I let out of the gas at 5300 rpm, mainly because prior dyno runs had shown I was making less power above 5000. The intersting thing about the HO cams and intake was that it was still pulling hard at 5300 rpm's, 220 hp !! with no signs of falling off. Had I pulled up to 5400 rpm, the hp increase would be in the range of +45 hp !!!!
In other words, this engine is now pulling well above 5000 rpm. Here are the peak numbers for the HO cam/Ho intake:
230 hp @ 4400 rpm / 290 tq @ 3650 rpm
I'm estimating the crankshaft HP @ 270 HP
270hp x .85= 229.5 hp
$250 WELL spent, in my opinion!
I'm interested to hear what some of you have to say about the "rest" of the HO package, the heads, pistons, etc....
MODS :

6.Autolite plugs ($8)
7.Mobil 1
8.AIT adjuster
9. Flowmaster cat back, 3" ($170)

Message: I have thought about the pistons but I want to go pressurized down the road. Don't need any more compression. I figured the intake would only help on the top end as I said it seemed to pull forever.

Message: looks like really good results for the $$ Matt! i wonder what all that extra HP in the upper R's will do for your 1/4 time? makes me wish my stock options would vest a bit quicker so i can get my cams and intake done.
btw, when you dyno-ed before, did you happen to get a wideband A/F ratio measurement? i got my truck dyno-ed Saturday and trying to decipher the meaning of it all has mean rather stumped. i have a scan of the print-out here:
http://www.milkmonkey.com/qcsp/images/dyno-7-06-02.jpg
do the numbers for the A/F ratio look about right for the mods i have? (very similar mods/planned mods as yours)
also, do you still get the pedal vibration with the new intake? Bernd has said it's from the intake plenum, does that get R&R'd for the intake install?
sorry for all the questions, but you are one of the few dyno-ing semi-regularly with about the same truck/mods as what i plan to do.

Message: Matt,
What did you use for the tool to hold the cams??? I was thinking of doing the cams and intake but planned on $330ish including the tool to do the cams. what about gaskets, I know the intake gaskets are re-usable what about the valvecover gaskets???
Thanks,
Chris

Message: crm, I do not have any readings on the A/F ratio.
Duner can probably shed more light on your A/F graph. What mods do you have currently ?
I have little if any vibration in the pedal, I suspect its your TB. The intake "plenum" is another name for the intake. I don't think thats your problem. More than likely its your TB.
Do you still have your stock TB? If so, bolt it back on and see if the vibration goes away.
Chris, I got the tool and instructions from KRC for $20. I still have the tool for the next install. I'm helping Alex install his cams and intake next month. Call KRC and buy the tool, $20 well spent. You won't need any gaskets. All the gaskets are reusable, including the valve covers. The covers use o-ring style gaskets. Makes the job Soooo much easier!

Message: Matt: i dont have the stock TB anymore. could i have bolted on the Fastman TB incorrectly? or is it the extra airflow? from what i've heard, both Fastman and F&B TB's have the problem in about 1-in-10 trucks. still got the vibration with the stick air intake setup too. it's not a big vibration, just enough to let me know it's there. got some ideas on how to fix it if i decide to.
current mods:
IP Z-tube
custom catback, FM 50 series, dual 2.25 exit
Fastman 68mm TB

Message: crm, The TB will only bolt on one way, I don't see a problem there. Its probably vibration from the throttle plate. No simple cure. Probably just have to live with it. I have the F&B TB, and have tested 3 different F&B tb's, have never seen this vibration.

Message: The vibration in the pedal is caused by a "standing wave" in the airflow that comes from the Z-Tube and from my Volant Tube. This wave is caused by the air bouncing back & forth thru the tube and then into the throttlebody. It's just a resonance that is created by everything being "just right" as far as size and materials. That's how it was explained by Bruce Bridges (the "B" in F&B). So, basically, it sounds like those who have a home-brew intake tube with rubber elbows like Matt's dont' get the vibration because the rubber is soft enough to absorb the vibration. The Z-tube being stainless steel and the Volant tube being hard plastic, the wave cannot dissapate and we feel it thru the throttle linkage. The way to fix it with a Z-tube is tack weld a small plate that is exactly the height of the Z-tube in a vertical position. Like a splitter in the mouth of the Z-tube right before it ends at the TB. I have not figured a solution for my Volant tube, so I am just wearing thicker shoes. Hahahahahha
Anyhow, as for the chain wedge tool, I'd just call Marty at KRC and get the instructions and wedge for $20. It's a hell of a deal!! You'll pay that in shippping just for Matt to send it to you when I'm done with my cams.........

Message: alex, the vibration doesnt go away when i put the stock intake setup back on. i'm going to try and add an air diverter in the tube this weekend. will see if that cures it.

Message: Dumb question...Matt, what are you referring to when you say HO intake? Is that a HO intake manifold? Did you get the HO intake, cams, tool, all from KRC?
Thanks.

Message: Yes, HO Intake Manifold. I got the HO camshafts, and HO Intake Manifold from Koons Dodge in Falls Church Virginia. The Timing Chain Wedge tool and instruction sheet came from KRC.
