I currently have a 68 charger and 87 grand national. The gn is very quick and so is the charger. I test drove a 2001 r/t dakota. I thought it would have been a lot faster. I still like the trucks. I was thinking of buying a cheap one like a 4cly or 6cyl. Then putting a crate 402 with a carb on it and tubbing it. Does anyone have an idea how hard it would be to put an crate motor like this in behind a 5speed trans. I know it will not be as fast as a gn but close would be nice.

If you don't have inspections in you're area it will be no problem , just gut everything out of the truck and start over. I would use a Painless wiring kit and wire it up like a street rod , ditch the air bags and ABS , use Auto Meter gauges , put in a fuel cell and a electric pump and regulator. Theres lots of stuff that I've left out but it's a start. My next daily driver is going to be a '97-98 RC Dakota with a W2 econo headed 378 with a .650" solid roller , comp in the mid 12's , 727 with a converter in the high 4,000 range and a 9 1/4 with 4.56's. I only drive about 4 miles a day to and from work and have other cars so it's not as un-practical as it sounds.

This issue of Mopar Muscle has a gen II Dakota
with a 440 in it. My mechanic has done several
dakota engine swaps, mostly v6 to v8 of various
years, but he did do one gen 1 dakota (late 80s)
with a big block, what a gorgeous truck it is too.
