Subject: M1 intake on '99 5.2L 4x4?

I currently own a '99 Dakota CC, 5.2L, 5-speed, 4x4, 3.55LSD. Some of the mods I currently have are, K&N FIPK, underdrive crank pulley, Black Magic fan, and Spin-Tech side exit exhaust. I'd like to compliment my current mods with a M1 and 50mm TB setup and eventually some 1.7's next year, but after looking at some of the dyno graphs you guys were showing, i'm a bit reluctant. The high end power is very attractive, but is my bottem end totally gonna get killed or what? Those dyno charts aren't really showing increases until 4000rpm.

I put an M1 2 barrel on my '99 Club Cab 2wd with a 318/A500/3.55's and was expecting to lose my bottom end for more top end, It didn't happen , It's got more bottom end than before and picked up almost 4 mph in the 1/8. Trying to launch is very tricky now , it boils the tires if you don't baby it out of the hole for about 30-40 feet or so. Another bonus is that throttle response is awesome.

My wife's truck is a '99 4x4 Sport, 5.2L w/3.55 gears and the 31x10x15' wranglers... It has headers, an F&B TB, and a Quick D intake. It is also running a '99 RT exhaust system. The truck sounds good, but is a pig off the line. An M1 on that truck will not, repeat, will NOT help burn the tires off. A 2bbl-M1 will help the mid to top end, and might give a little bottom end, but not enough to be able to spin the tires (unless it's wet!). A set of 1.7s would be nice (from 3000 rpm up). If I had it to do all over again, I would have gone with 3.92 gears on that... THEN it would be fun. I'd stick with the stock beer barrel for torque, go with 1.7s and a TB/headers... or just do gears!

My '00 RT has the 4bbl M1 which gave me 16 hp, but dropped 26 ft lbs!!! Cam and heads brought that back up.. now have 283 rwhp and 325 ft. lbs.!

Sam is right. I just installed an M1 on my truck, and it doesn't spin the tires much better, if any, than before. It does run better in the mid and top end, and maybe slightly better on the bottom. I don't think I lost any on the bottom, but don't think I gained much either. The main reason I put the M1 on my truck was to get rid of that freakin' belly pan gasket (which was blown). I did gain a full second in the quarter with the M1. I would say some of this time was attributed to getting rid of the blown belly pan gasket. This is suppose to cause a loss in performance, as well as oil comsumption and excessive pinging.

Thanks for the reply guys. The more I think about it, I might just go with a set of 1.7's and a 50mm TB for now. This truck doesn't see a track too often the way it is, so an M1 might be a bit too excessive.
