Subject: High-flow cat ?'s IP: Logged
Message: hello all,
i am thinking about getting a high-flow cat for my 2001 QC (4.7L auto). it has 2 pre-cats and then a main right before the muffler. couple of things i need to find out first:
1. am i going to lose any low-end with a high-flow cat? i just got the exhaust done with 2 1/2" to flowmaster, dual 2 1/4" out. i am just concerned about opening it up too much and losing that off-the-line power.
2. should this be installed prior to or after a new TB from Fastman? (installed 3" Z tube friday night) again, i wanna make sure i balance out
everything as good as possible to maintain low-end power and still get a kick in the mid to high end.
3. i wanna make sure i dont run into any trouble passing emissions (dallas county is getting sticky). if i get one of the Carsound cats that Bernd sells i wont have to run an O2 simm will i? just concerned about making sure i get one that wont trip any MIL's and has hook-ups for existing whatever.
4. anyone got any dyno results from installing a high-flow? i've seen numbers range from 5-15 rwhp. just wondering if i should expect a decent
boost from this.

Message: Duner (turbo4.7L) had good luck with a high-flow cat. Get your TB before you open up your exhaust anymore. If you end up losing bottom end you should look into cams. They're a sure bet for good torque increases.

Message: CThomp: i think thats the way i am headed. i dont do any towing or hauling with the truck, so my interest is more play than anything else. and the odd chance that i do get to play, it's gonna start out from a dead stop :) so losing low-end is something i wanna avoid if at all possible.
now i just need to decide on all the TB stuff :)

Message: For the TB go with the Fastman. You retain the "stock look" and flow is flow. Meaning a 71mm Fastman will probably flow more than a 70mm F&B but not as much as a 72mm F&B. The Fastman also costs $200 less than the F&B.

Message: man i know what you're saying about losing low-end torque, but not to fear, a few mods here and there will pump it right back up. i did the same thing. dont worry, get the high flow cat, b/c its going to be one of the many accesories you will be adding whether or not you think yuou will b/c performance is addictive and you wont be able to stop!
get the catco cat from summit or jegs(cheap&good)
92 dak, cc, 318, k&N, catco cat,flowmaster,B&M shift kit, asp pullys, modine radiator, mpsbec chip, flowtech headers, accel wires, bosch +4, 2" 3" lowering, roll pan, throttle body spacer.

Message: yeah, i know i'll definitely be getting one, just wanna make sure i do it in the right order (or close to it).
i looked at summit's site and cant figure out which one i'll need. i know it's 2 1/2" in/out, but on a 2001 4.7L do i need one with an air hose or connectors for an O2 sensor? also, what length?

Message: check what the diameter is of the pipe that youre going to place the cat, or find out from the dealer and get what you want.

Message: im not to sure about the 4.7, but on my 5.2, the o2 sensor is on the y-pipe and there were no fittings to go on the cat. the little air tube that was on the cat, i just bent and sealed it off so nothing would escape.

Message: Ok, now im a little freaked out. I was heading towards getting an exhaust for my 3.9
I have no other mods, but planning on getting an intake. But if i get an exhaust.. am i going to lose back presure or what ?!

Message: you might lose some, mainly depends on what you do... i think that as long as you do some intake mods on the top end and dont get to radical on the exhaust you should be okay.

Message: BLKDAK... stay with a smaller diameter pipe, for instance, the 3.9 has a 1 7/8 pipe.... upgrade w/mandrel bent tubing 1/4 inch bigger for more flow. any more and you'll lose torque. and must i mention... get a nice sounding muffler. check around on the internet and listen to some 3.9's with flow's, dynomax, edelbrock, etc. thats what i did on my 5.2, and all my friends are jealous as hell!!! It'll be the most fun research and definatly worth the time, b/c it will save you money in the long run! trust me:-(

Message: what is your pipe diameter right now? what ever it is, go 1/4 in. larger pipe.. but if you're planning on doing more mods to your dak then go with 1/2 in. larger pipe

Message: canucker: i have done 2 dyno runs so far. however, the first run is rather skewed and prolly should just be thrown out. right now i am at 208 rwhp and 289 rwtq, ande i trust that those number are accurate. i've not done any other mods since the Fastman TB as the money i would have had for mods was tied into stock options that are now virtually worthless :(
hopefully i'll be able to get the cams and intake done in the next 2 months, just wish i had the confidence to do them myself. in the meantime, a gutted cat or a flanged pipe might be in the works.
if you do a search for "quad cab sleeper project" you'll find links to the scanned dyno sheets as well as the depressing conversation that followed :)

Message: nope, not anywhere near done :) money has been kinda scarce for mods since the stock market started sucking.
i'd really like to be able to provide everyone with a step by step documented improvement in dyno pulls, but considering that adds another 45-65 bucks for each mod, it gets steep really quickly. i'll plan on another dyno after the cams and cat upgrade. by then i'll also have new plugs and the 180 t-stat installed.

Message: yeah I hear you...cheapest I found here was $70 CDN.
I have one planned after I get my cat-back exhaust on there and a TB (right now all I have is my home brew K&N). Then I will likely do the cams and port and polish my heads and do another pull ... I'm not sure where in there I'm going to put some headers and a high flow cat on .. maybe right after my cat back...
even still, that's 3 pulls ... $210!!! that's half a throttle body ... or 1/20th of a supercharger ;)

Message: I live in ontario canada, and we recently got emission laws. Would a larger high flow cat. screw up my emmision readings in my 2000 R/t. I'm thinking headers too possibly, later as the kids get older a blower, or twin turbo set-up. Any info on any of these would be helpful.
