Subject: How hard is it to install valve springs? IP: Logged
Message: I am lined up to get my Crower 1.7 RRs installed Saturday.
I have decided to install the rockers, guideplates, longer push rods and change out the valve springs. I ended up ordering parts from several different sources and had some difficulty finding the valve springs. I did locate some at PAWINC.com and am having them overnighted so I should have them inn time for Saturdays install.
I have found several articles that suggest the valve spring change out is not very difficult. The Crower tech told me that my stock retainers and cups should work with the new springs (PN #68405). Has anyone changed Crower springs? If so do the springs work with the stock parts and was the change out relatively straight forward?
Thanks
Bill

Message: judging by your profile I'm guessing it's a 5.9L. You'll have the heads off to do this one. Very easy with the right tools. just clamp or some use compressed air, to compress the springs, (kinda like a C-clamp. one end on the valve face and the other on the spring) once locked in place, remove the retainers and gently open the clamp. and then reverse to install.

Message: You can get a valve spring tool to do it while the heads are still on. Just need to put air pressure to the cylinder to hold the valves in place.

Message: if you gotta ask questions like this one are you sure you are the right guy to be doing the job???? at least get someone that really knows what they are doing(an experienced mechanic) to look over your shoulder while you are doing this, even some of the advise you got previous to mine is somewhat faulty.

Message: I was not able to get my springs installed at the time I installed the roller rockers as the stock hardware was not compatible with the Crower springs.
I got a lesson in "valve springs 101" from a Dodge mechanic. It is lengthy process. I am planning to get the correct Crower parts and install the springs, one head as time will permit.
Will there be any adverse consequences resulting from running the engine with the stiffer Crower springs on one head and the OEM springs on the other for a short time (maybe up to two thousand miles)?

Message: that is one you should have asked your "Dodge Mechanic" but no not really as long as you keep the rpm in the stock range that the engine was designed for, however all bets are off if you changed the cam.

Message: Do it all at once, both sides.
Couple tips for you: Get some type of pencel magnet for removing the keepers. Use a KD 3271 spring compressor. Plug the oil return holes with rags. Put a socket over the retainer and give it a whack with a hammer to loosen up the keepers. Most important tip, don't drop a valve ;) Put the working cylinder at TDC.
You can use a 1/4" nylon rope to keep the valve up.

Message: Hey you're over in Katy. I live over in Spring. Changing valvesprings is easy. Once you've done it a few times. Bring your truck over and I'll change em out for you in a couple of hours.

Message: Mehdi Mir
You make it sound so easy!! Do you have all the tools required to make the change with the heads on (air compressor/sprak plug hole fitting, spring compressor)?
I'm going to finish rounding up the rest of the Crower install parts and will contact you. I have to go fishing (HAVE TO) this weekend, go to Kerrville next weekend, then its the 4th of July... It may be several weeks before I can find time to do it. Then of course your schedule will probably be full. I'm in no real hurry except for worrying that my valve train will explode with my re programmed 5400 rpm shifts.
Maybe we can work out a trade. I've got a stage 2 Jet Chip (model 90002-S), TB spacer and some other stuff that needs a good home.
I'll be in touch

Message: Oh yeah it's simple, but easy to screw up, especially setting the valves afterwards. I have everything except an air compressor. If you can grab hold of an air compressor for a day, it'll be a piece o cake. One of my buddies' got one but he's down in league city. I'll check with my neighbors around here too. I've done springs on my Dakota twice and twice on my LT1 caprice using compressed air and the rope trick. Air is definitely better, it snaps those valves right up. Whenever you're ready lemme know.

Message: M&M - I have an air compressor that will work just fine. Thanks for the offer to help. I'll bring this post back up in a couple of weeks and see how our schedules look.
