Subject: R/T Tires? IP: Logged
Message: What kind of tires are you guys running on the 17x9 r/t rim? Which tires have you had the best dry traction success with? I am not talking about slick! Only street driven everyday tires please.
Thanks!

Message: What's more important to you. Price, or performance?? I am currently using the Kumho ECSTA 711 255/55/17 on my truck. They have real good all around traction, and can be bought for $105 each mounted balanced and installed from www.discounttire.com. They don't list them on the website, but they do carry them. If you are in Cali, just go to your local America's Tire store. Same people. I've also had real good performance from the BFG G-Force KDWS 255/50/17 tires. Best traction in any of the tires I've used so far. They were about $135 each. If you want something a ittle wider, I've heard the Nitto NT450's are real good in the 275/50/17 size(stock hight)

Message: Nitto - best dry traction
Falkan - OK
Dunlop - Not
Kumho - Cheap and OK
Goodyear - Expensive
BFG - OK
These are about the only companies that make the 255/55/17 or 275/50/17 tires for our truck.

Message: Have you personally used the Nitto's and all the other tires you mentioned?? If not, you can not make a good comparison. The Kumho's have real good traction and if you havn't tried them you might underestimate them due to the price. I have not tried the nitto's, so I'm not saying the Nitto's aren't that good.

Message: I going off what you guys say about your tires. Kumho's are on my list of tires to try next, I'm not bashing anyone of them except the Dunlops and Goodyear. Don't worry I don't think anyone has tried all of them, I just wanted to list all options.

Message: Oh-yeah I have used to Nittos on a Z28 and they did a good job. But I'm cheap when it comes to tires especially since buying the R/T, they don't last long enough to spend a ton of money on them.

Message: What about a good winter tire? Up here in Canada we get winter like 6 months of the year.. so is there a good snow tire that would be recommended?

Message: I'm not sure but I know Dunlop makes a winter sport tire, but most of those are 60 series tires. You might have a hard time finding a normal sized winter 17" tire for our trucks. Perhaps you can get a set of cheap 15" dakota wheels and strap some snow tires on those. I see dakota wheels on ebay all the time for a very fair price. That way you can pick up some cheap 15" snow tires and not destory your R/T wheels.

Message: Get the Bridgestone Winter Duelers (225/75/15) & put them on steel winter rims.
I put those tires on my stock 15" rims. It was a great $500CAD investment (safety). When the spring arrives, I put my R/T rims/rubber back on.

Message: As far as snow tires, the BFG G-Force KDWS tires handled the snow pretty good when I had them. I drove through the blizzard that shut down New Mexico, Oklahoma, and TX panhandle the day after Christmas in '00. My R/T only spun the tires when I wanted them to spin, and I passed many a FWD and 4WD car and SUV in the ditch.
As far as the wider is better statement, it really depends on the application and intended use. At the track, a wider tire is usually better. In snow and wet conditions, wider is not better. Also, as light as the back ends are on our truck, you might be able to get better traction with a narrower tire because you will get more pressure per squar inch than on a wider tire.
The best tires I've had for traction and performance have been the BFG G-Force KDWS. They had awsome wet and dry traction and real good snow traction. Also got my best 60' times at the track with them. They were a 255/50/17 size. I've ran both the 275/55/17 Pirelli Scorpion Zero's, and the 275/50/17 Falken Zeix's. Neither one had the traction or performance of the G-Force's. The Kumho's I currently have are probably the second best tire I've used and by far the cheapest. I've also ran the stock RSA's, and the BFG Scorchers.

Message: None that look like the factory wheels. Any rim from a Dakota, Durango, or Viper will fit on the hubs. The rear Viper wheels are to wide to be used though. I will be using my roommates 15x6 wheels/tires from his '92 Dak next time I go to track.

Message: I like Bridgestone Also but i went with the 255/55/17 Dunlop Rover GTX and i have to say that im throughly impressed by these tires plus they have a 50000 mile warranty which none of the other tires have plus they provide a good amount of grip and the price was very reasonable at about 560 dollar Shipped thats about 129 a tire
