Subject: Bernd...nitrous question IP: Logged
Message: What are the dangers (if any) of using nitrous? I am referring to dangers to the engine. I am considering getting a nitrous system, but I also need the engine to last basically forever. Is this possible? How much does it usually run to have the bottle filled? How difficult is the installation? Does the factory fuel system need to be upgraded, or is it sufficient?

Message: i think a nitrous wet system is very safe. The only people that have told me "your gonna burn your pistons" and "your motor's gonna blow up" have been people who have never even seen a nitrous bottle.
Now it will wear out your engine faster.. so will a turbo or supercharger. Whenever cylinder pressures rise it happens... Just read about it and do the math and see if its right for you.

Message: Nitrous is safe (to a point) when used "as directed". If you use it in moderation and don't go overboard (no more than 100HP shot), you'll be fine. Don't do like some others who claim that the 150HP shot works "just fine" on their engines...well...it's their engine.
Make sure you run higher grade fuel, one step colder on the plugs (Autolite 3923's gapped @ .035"), quality wires as well, and a decent intake and exhaust system (this includes headers). This will get the most out of your system.
As for the installation...count on about 4-5 hours with running the lines through the frame. Zip-ties to the brake lines or fuel lines (as I have seen on a lot of installs) is NOT the way to route the lines. Get a bottle warmer with your system as well to keep the nitrous pressure consistent. There's nothing worse than running the bottle too cold and blowing off an airhat (nitrous liquifies when cold).
No...the factory fuel system doesn't need to be upgraded as the kits were tested with the factory fuel system in mind. Having the bottle filled varies but shouldn't run more than $40 for a 10# bottle (on the high side of the price-scale).
