Does anyone have one of the 71mm Fastman TB's on a 2000 4.7L? I'm thinking about getting one of these and would like some input. I'll be going from a 65mm to the 71mm. Thats a pretty big jump.

Any input is appreciated.

71mm????
I've only heard of the 65, 68, 70, and 72mm. I have a 2002 with (I'm assuming) a 68mm. I have a h-brew intake (pvc/toilet flange, and a cone ford K&N a-filter).
I also have a VERY free flowing exhaust:
eliminated the third cat
in it's place a straight pipe
into a 2 chamber 40 series Flowmaster.
then out to duals 3.5" tips

I wanted the 70mm but hear a lot of problems with idling. Now how is this 71mm???

Oh yea, and how much$$$$$

The 71mm is offered by fastman. You pay him $200.00 and your existing stock TB. He sends you a modified 65 or 68 TB. The 65 is modified to 68 and the 68 is modified to 71. The fastman is in no way related to F&B. The "true" 68mm is supposed to be the most efficient for the 4.7L (i've been exchanging e-mails with the owner). By "true" I mean that the stock 68mm is really 3mm smaller because of an obstruction in the shaft. Fastmn TB's are modified for maximized flow and cost far less than F&B.

This is from speedtweaks.net on the fastman throttle body page:

Starting April 1, 2002...we will no longer be requiring a Core Charge. However, you will receive an email that you must acknowledge. It will be sent out at the time you order. and states that you must return your factory original core within 30 days of receiving the new throttle body. If you do not respond to the email, we will not ship.

I just went through the same decision you did. I had 50, 52, and 55x52 F&B's on my Ram at various points. They were all great. I thought about getting a Fastman TB for my 4.7. In the end, I decided to stick with Bruce. His stuff is awesome. If it's a matter of money, the Fastman is decent. But if you can swing it, get the F&B. I'm waiting eagerly for mine right now.

The F&B units are a nice peice of work but they are just a air valve and air doesn't care what it looks like. There have been lots of idling issues with the F&B as well. I doubt there are any with the fastman TBs since they are based on stock unit. Personaly if they are half the price I will take the fastman.

I just ordered the fastman TB a little while ago. $200.00 delivered. Pretty good I think. I got the 65mm bored to 68mm. Dan(the owner) said the "true" 68mm is all the 4.7 really needs. He said after 68 or 69mm the 4.7 starts to lose low end torque. He'll do the 71mm but doesn't really recomend it for the 4.7L. He's done some dynos with the 71 and 72 F&B and neither made that significant gains. Dan said he's sold close to 3,000 of his TB's and only had one come back. It was for an 8.0L ram. He said i'll notice excellent gains with the 68mm. From the way it sounds he works the TB's over alot. A thinner blade, ported shaft, inset screws, the works. And it looks stock.

Also as CW said, its just an air valve. It will flow the same amount of air as the F&B. I'll have mine middle of next week. Guess thats what I get for ordering at the end of the week.

Well let us know what you feel...obviously you will feel a difference going to 68mm....us 2001+ guys already wear 68mm so I dont think I could justify paying for a "true" 68mm but hey let us know. Based on Dyno numbers and the excellent customer service from Bruce I still think I will go with his product....I'll call him up an dask him about the loss of torque over 68mm....don't think it would be an issue with HO cams.....CW says the torque jumps up with those cams...WHERE'S JONAS!?!?!?!?!?!!?

Its your money. The 68mm TB on the 2001 is actually 3mm smaller because of the inside of the shaft. As far as dyno numbers go. An air valve is an air valve when they flow the same amount of air. Now for the free-flow cat.

What size cat did you get 2.5" or 3"? Do you have the full hurst shifter or just the t-handle? I've been pondering the hurst shifter but i've never heard a final verdict on whether or not the are worth it. So many questions.

I'm not really sure. Shoot Dan an e-mail. fastman@attbi.com. He will get back to you. He got back to me pretty quick. Dan's a good guy to deal with. Plus he has that cool Minnesota accent. I think the 71mm may work okay on the 2001+ because it has to compensate for the 3 cats. Or in your case Clevite just 2 precats. Either way I have only one cat which is soon to be a free-flow cat. Maybe if in the future I get cams and a little pcm work done i'll get the larger TB. But i'll definitly go back to the fastman for the 71mm when that time comes. You can't beat $200 for a quality product.

I shot him a e-mail about the 71mm TB.

Hello Curtis

I can make them 71mm. I do not recommend this but I will.

Your core homeported with just the restriction step should still be reworkable.

If easier you can send me your TB and I can overnight it back.

I am heading out of town to the East Coast to install 15 TB’s and 4 topend packages.

I will be gone for 2 weeks and cannot fill your order until then.

Let me know.

Thank You

I have a 2001 4.7 dakota. Are you modifying a 68mm stock throttle body to accept a 71mm throttle blade? I have a home ported TB and want to go up in size from the 68 but do not want to spend the money for a F&B unit. If they are a true 71mm TB I want one and will be buying one from a Canadian outlet.

FYI all I ported out was the torque step. Is it still a good core?

As CW and others have done, I removed the step in the TB when I home ported my 68mm TB on my 01 4.7.

It's true it still has the same blade, but more volume going to it. Seems nice with the momebrew/K&N intake, and no belt fan. Is that what he's doing for $200, what I've done to my 68mm? If so, e-mail me, I'll do it for $150, and overnight it back to you!!!

I'm putting the 2 1/2" in and out Carsound cat on my truck. My truck does not have pre-cats either and I don't want to reduce backpressure too far - the 3" might be too much on this motor, IMHO. I think this, with the 70mm F&B, and the cams will equal out to a nice package. I'm not looking for all out RPM power. I probably drive more like an autocrosser than a drag racer.

Wow Dan did reply quick as hell,

I asked if it had a 71mm blade on it and this is what I got back for a reply (it sounds like he's saying it does have a 71mm blade what do you guys think)

The stock 4.7 TB has a 3mm restriction in it just before the blades. So what they say is 65 or 68mm is really 3mm smaller.

The 2000 TB I can make to a true 65 - 68mm max

The 2001 I can make to a true 68 - 71mm max

I do not recommend going over 68mm as the gains over this become minimal.

I will build whatever you want.

My website shows a good modified 4.7 pic. If you want a can send a side by side comparison pic. I make a very high quality TB for a very good price.

Let me know

I am heading to the East coast Tues to do a group install and 4 topend package engine builds and will be gone for 2 weeks.
