Can anyone tell me the effects of a new hood with the scoops in it? I've seen pictures of Dakotas with these hoods and I think they look pretty cool. I think there is one called "Shaker"?
I have a 2000 CC 4x4 4.7L V8 and I am wondering, does getting more air under the hood improve any performance, or is it just for looks? Will rain or snow getting in there have any effect? Dust or dirt? Thanks a lot.

The biggest performance gains for sucking more air into your throttle body comes from removing the factory air box and replacing it with something less restrictive.

If you are going to buy an aftermarket hood, at least 95% of your brand decision (in my opinion) should be based on looks alone, and the other 5% is any direct performance difference between one hood or another. The hood's air intake would have to suck air virtually directly into the engine to make any performance gains, and even those would be pretty small. The moment your air travel takes any twists and turns through pipes or passes through filters, the "Ram Air" effect is decreased. You have to be going pretty fast for the forced air to build up noticeable pressure. The biggest difference you'll see is that a Ram Air hood will direct colder outside air into your intake vs. the hot stagnant air from your engine bay.

The Shaker and GTS hoods probably have the least restrictive air passages for the Dakotas. After that only a couple of hoods like the Suncoast Creations or AAR hoods have any type of hardware for the air to actually get routed into your intake system, the rest of the hoods (especially the cheap ones) are looks alone and do not direct any air towards your intake at all.

Keep in mind that the hp gains between the Shaker hood and something more restrictive like the AAR or Suncoast is pretty minimal, but it does exist. Last I heard Jonas was trying to get airflow and Dyno #'s for his GTS hood.

Don't buy a hood you won't be happy with visually. It's a big chunk of change to buy, ship, prep, mount and paint a hood, don't compromise and buy something you may not like down the road just to save a few bucks or gain 1-5hp.

(PS - after looking back at this note, don't think I'm trying to bash the Shaker or GTS hoods... They're extremely high quality hoods that are also very nice looking. A lot of people own these and everyone I've spoken to is very happy with their purchase. I'm just saying that my opinion is you should choose a hood primarily based on the fact that you like the way it looks the best, if it also gives you a couple of extra horsepower then it's a nice bonus.)

Thanks for the responses. Are there any concerns about snow or dirt getting in there and causing any problems?
Junior, you have a sweet looking truck. I was looking at your web site and that is what started me thinking about the hood in the first place.

The Shaker hood is built by Pro-Finish/Pro-Glass.

You can also check out some pictures of their setup on my web site. My Dak is in the shop right now getting the Shaker hood installed & painted. I'll get my Dak back next Wednesday or Thursday, and will finish the install then. I'll post some finished pictures shortly thereafter.
