87. you dont need a higher octain, unless it pings.

The gas I use comes with an additive to clean your engine. I only use 87 octane, but I like using it because of this cleaner stuff....
From what I've been reading, the motor is designed to run best on regular....
fine by me... :0)

I ran 87 for about 1000 miles. For the heck of it, I put a tank of 93 in and the thing really picked up steam. So, I've been running it ever since.

I never run regular in anything. My Dak deserves 89 octane. Sometimes I'll run 93 but I heard it resets the timing to 0 degrees and runs slower.

I pretty much have to run at least Shell 89 or 92 from Exxon otherwise the truck pings. If I run 87 it pings bad under low rpms and applied torque, like going up a hill.
I've done all the mods everyones mentioned and the thing still pings; everything from replacing the belly pan gasket to the thermostat change.
Just forking out the money for gas now or drive my motorcycle if need be.

I live in Los Angeles. Our premium is now only 91 Octane. I guess it is different in other parts of the country.
I used 91 octane and it actually bogged me down. I got better MPG with 87 Octane.
P.S. Bosch Platnium +4 SUCK!!! I actually lost 2 MPG!

The manual says 87 unless it pings from towing, heavy loads or climbing hills. So that's what I'll run till I notice any pinging. With a 24 gallon tank in the QC it better run on 87 or I'll be broke ;)

87 octane on a '99 5.2 auto. Running a 180 degree T-Stat, Autolite 3923s, and, depending on how carried away I get with the KRC Performance '$5.00 Timing Advance Kit'.

89 octane with Jet Chip II, 180 T-Stat, 3923s, 4 inch Z-Tube with 9 inch pro-flow fitler, and 70mm TB. Tried the recommended 93 octane that JET said to use, felt no real power difference or saw any improvement in gas mileage over 89 octane.
I like using this disclaimer:
All grades of gas are the minimum rating, 89 may be 90, 87 may be 88, etc (read the square yellow sticker on your pump the next time you're getting gas)

89 with the MP PCM in a 2000 otherwise stock R/T. Been considering going back to the 87 because it has never pinged with any feul. I will wait untill I get the 180 t-stat in first. The lower the octain the more power it should make as long as it's not pinging. Lower number means easier to burn, higher means harder. Dakota's don't have knock sensors so there is no way for the computer to cut back on power with lower grade of feul.

Ussually 93 Amoco or Shell... Or when I'm in a really good mood 94 Sonoco :P.
Of course with the PCM you dont really have a choice... you have to use premium.

Bri, change the T-stat to a 180 degree one, and changet the plugs to the autolight (copper) 3923's and this should help.

I just changed my t-stat today. WHAT A PAIN IN THE ASS! I had to scrape thaqt old gasket off and that was a bitch! Well, Finally got everything up and running.
