Subject: exhaust pipe size ?
IP: Logged

Message:
hello I need opinions on something a muffler shop told me, I went to a shop to see if they would remove my 3rd cat, the owner said he would but told me I might want to wait until I put more mileage on it for warranty reasons, so I said no problem but I still want the truck to sound louder. OK here's what I want opinions on:: First I have the 4.7 with the flowmaster cat back system, 3" tailpipe with 50 series suv muffler. We talked about replacing the 50 series muffler with a 3" 40 series, I'm ok with that but he said if I increase the pipe size from the cat to the muffler to 3" it would make it louder. I called flowmaster when I got home and asked them they said they don't advise making the pipe 3" because the engine doesn't make enough exhaust to fill the 3" pipe and I would lose my low end. I called Borla they basically said the same thing, tech told me "our cat back is all 2.50" Than flowmaster tells me they discontinued the 3" 40 series and I would have to use the delta flow 40 series. Can anyone tell me about the going to 3" pipe making it louder or killing the low end???? Sorry so long

I got my intake before I switched to 3" pipe, so
I didnt notice any loss of power, but man is it
loud! the 40 series muffler is probably a two
chamber muffler anyway, so you shouldnt
have a problem with loss of back pressure.
My Dynomax has a straight through design,
and sounds/performs great.

I beleive the general consensus is to do
intake before exhaust, but you can drive to the
local hardware store and build one yourself
for under $30.00 add a K&N filter and you're
set.

A bigger pipe with not enough air flow -- yet anyways; higher rpms will fill it -- wont be traveling through it as fast as if it were smaller. If it's bigger, obviously a lot more air can get through and there will not be any restrictions as if it were smaller.

Freeing up the exhaust also effects other things, but I do not have a solid grasp on the valvetrain -- yet.

I made a home made intake using a K&N filter allready, I'm just trying to find out who's right with what i was told I, e-mailed KRC and speed tweaks to see what they say but neither one has responded yet. I would like to ask someone who really knows but don't know who to ask.

Keep the flowmaster 50 series but cut out the cat and keep it 2.5". It will be louder.

Ok as far as removing the 3rd cat will that automatically void my warranty? or is it like aftermarket parts where they can only deny a warranty claim if they can show that the aftermarket part caused the problem?

Removing it will void the warranty on the cat obviously, but shouldn't on anything else. However, remember that it can be illegal depending on what you replace it with etc.
