Earlier I posted about a grinding noise when I am going about 83-85 and then it gets really bad when going 95-100 and then stops at anything over one hundred. It's coming from the front end and someone recommended getting my bearings repacked but I asked dodge and they said that the bearings are sealed. I need to figure this out anyone with any ideas?? I am going on a big driving trip and want to have everything fixed before then. The noise is a strong grinding/vibrating noise from the front but only at those mphs's. Thanks.

Bearings are sealed in my 2000. So are the ball-joints, but that doesn't mean they can't go bad. My wheel bearings went out at around 20K. To fix this, the dealer had to replace the entire wheel hub assembly.

Good luck,
YJ

If it was something like a bearings, then it should be occuring at lower speeds too. Maybe it's something simple like the fan being push. At speeds near 100mph air will be moving quite fast threw the engine bay. Just poke around and check to see if everything is tight.

Ops I now I see that you said it stops over 100mph. Hmm ? Try jacking up the truck then spinning the front tires to make sure nothing seems wrong. You could always record the sound then post it so people could hear what your talking about. That could better help us judge what the problem might be.

100mph Tape!
IP: Logged

Message:
I would check the rubber type flap and plastic shield that goes under the bottom of the radiator and right behind the lower valance. At certain speeds these can clatter because of air buffeting. Although I didn't think it sounded quite like grinding - mine did it and it drove me crazy until I found the source. I know it sounds kinda low-tech, but you'd be amazed at what a couple of well placed strips of duct tape can do. They don't call it 100mph tape for nothing! hahaha

I finally removed the rubber flap part because it was a pain to retrieve sockets, nuts and bolts that would drop into that area.

Duct tape and bailing wire..... the greatest inventions ever!

Yeah I wish I could think of some better words to describe it but it gets so loud at 95-99 mph and you can actually feel the truck vibrating and it's just a really loud like "waaaaaaaa" haha don't know if that will help but it's not just the noise you can actually feel it and then it cuts out at about 100 and is fine again all the way up to 115 (governor). So I don't know and I got my truck back and the dealer didn't know either, but they thought it might be my catatlytic convertor, but I highly doubt that it sounds like it's in the driveshaft or something but I don't know enough about trucks to really figure it out myself, but it sure is annoying as hell and can't be good for the truck. Anyone ever heard of anythign like this??

My 1st R/T had the dreaded driveshaft vibe that would start at about 85 and be horrible at about 95 and it would totally quit at about 100. The driveshaft vibe on mine felt like it would start right at the back window and work it's way forward till it got to the dash. It never sounded like any grinding.... more like a howl! hahaha

maybe grinding was the wrong word for it but that sounds exactly like the problem I'm having! SO what should I do!! Would the dodge dealer replace that? I have an extended warranty but I don't know exactly what's covered. Should I ask them about it, what did you do and what would you recommend???? thanks a lot

I was still under my original warranty....

There is a TSB for the problem that tells exactly what they need to do to fix the problem. On mine they replaced the tailshaft housing and the driveshaft to cure the problem..... all under warranty. Mine was a '98 CC.

Thanks a lot, they were totally wrong when they assumed it was my cat!! oh well though they are getting me a new one under warranty, also i have a leak in my exhuast that I needed to get fixed so I had to take it to a exhuast shop anyway, but I am going to call dodge in the morning and tell them about what you said. I really appreciate it, it's been annoying me for some time now! Also anyone know what's up with the twin turbo project at speedtweaks? wasn't it supposed to be done a while ago?? just wondering
