Flex-a-Lite Black Magic 150.
At summit for $188. It will fit fine in the place of your clutch fan and is about the only fan that can keep a Dak V8 cool. Some people have had success with dual fan setups but they are pretty pricey

Thanks for your post 4wDakota!! But... I already have a Black Magic 150 in place of my cluth fan and it IS NOT enoug to cool my Dak. I live in Phoenix and it gets very hot here. My truck will run hot at idle with the air on and eventually overheat. Also, hillclimbing and driving in sand (my truck is a 4x4)will cause the truck to heat up. Im looking for a fan setup that is OVERKILL. I want to be able to offroad with the air on and not overheat. I am planing on getting the flowkooler water pump from speedtweaks and hopefully that will help some butt i need more fan. I think that the problem with the black magic is that it doesnt cover enough of the radiator to cool effectively. I am close to putting the clutch fan back on if I cant find an answer soon.

SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!

I dont want to loose that power that the electric frees up!!

Toby, I added a Flex-a-Lite low profile pusher to the front of my 98 5.2 to go along with my Black Magic and it fits just perfectly between the condenser and front bumper. I connected it to my black magic so they run together and keeps my 5.2 cool even in hot humid Atlanta. I got mine pusher at Summit for about $90. It is a low profile and 2 1/2 inches wide, just right for our Daks.

I am in Hawaii on vacation right now so do not know the part # but I am sure Summit will help you out.

Temps havn't getten too much above 90 degrees here yet though. Got it from Summit for $93 shipped to my door. Am currently in process of making a shroud for it to increase the cooling capability.

I measured my radiator and would have to mount them over/under not side by side to make it fit. Can you do this?? Thankyou SOOOO much for all your help guys... I LOVE THIS FORUM!!!

On my truck(Gen II) the fans are mounted side by side.
I made some mounts out of aluminum.

They will work mounted over, under but I don't know how you would attach them to your rad. with the designed shroud.

I don't have a Gen III to look at for reference.

The problem with the Gen III Daks is that the radiator is square so dual 11" fans side by side doesn't cover the entire radiator. Even the large BM 150 has a gap all the way around. With electric fans you need lots of cfm and lots of radiator coverage area. I've thought about purchasing (2) 12" fans for $100 eash and building a custom mount for them. Each pulls 1600+ cfm so thats over 3200 for the two but once again you don't cover much of the radiator.
Doing some basic math here's what I figure>

BM 150 15" diameter > 176.7in^2, 2800cfm
Spal Dual 11" > 190.0in^2, 2780cfm
custom dual 12" > 226.2in^2, 3200cfm

Another alternative is the dual 14" fans for the full size trucks that pull 5000+ cfm but that setup is $375 and is over 30" wide.

Any suggestions guys.

I tried the Perma Cool before the BM...it CLAIMS 2950, but does not deliver. I sent it back and bought the BM, it moves what it says it moves and with the pusher on the front, I have a tornado running throught the radiator so this setup works great for me and I am confident it will keep me cool here in Atlanta too. The pusher just fit down in betweent the bumper and radiator by fitment, no mounting..I did have to cut off two of the small fan guards as the grill pushed them into the fan slightly, but it works fine now. When I return from Hawaii, I will try to get some pics of the setup.

On my 99 5.2, I used a stock 4.7 fan and in between the rad and condensor a slimline.
Worked perfect. May sell but paid well over $200 for the setup.

On my 01 QC 5.9 just use the stock electric, and haven't overheated but I don't mind running at 210 idling in traffic. I set my engines up to run warm since they run better that way. Everyone always wants to run cold and I've proven over and over that setup properly a warm engine will always drive better overall.

Now you want the hot tip on which plug works best overall - bar none the champ 4412's.

Do you know what the specs are on those stock electric fans that come on the newer Daks.
What size fan is between your condensor and radiator.

Thanks,

The stock 4.7 is 15" diameter - don't know flow rates.
The Flex Alite is 12" diameter, 21/4 thick and the specs are probably available on their website.

The other option is to run 2 thin Flex a Lites and the crank driven one but have on the crank one your fan blade on a 4.7 clutch.
This setup will disengage very quickly but still lock up if you temp gets over 225-230. The stock 4.7 fan is much smaller and lighter than you fan so when you put your fan on the 4.7 clutch it works out pretty good.

I never overheated with the 2 electrics only but I live in PA (though did tow 2 skiis to Fl. and didn't overheat in the keys either). My 4.7 ele. fan was controlled by the Flex-a-lite controller and the thin fan by the A/C system.

If you live in a warm climate and are worried about running warm I recommend the second setup as it will give you about the same performance as all electric. I have a 4.7 clutch, fan, electric fan, and 12" flex-a-lite fan w/controller here currently not being used.

4wdDakota, I have a 98 5.2 as well and that Flex-a_lite will just fit perfectly between your bumper and the a/c condenser if yours is like mine. I am pretty pleased with how it works. There is not as much room in between my radiator and condenser as I have the tranny cooler in there too..factory mounted. That is why I put the pusher on the outside.

Hey YA

Where did you get the controller for your Spal fan? Do you have it on a temperature and A/C activation setup?
I'm looking at the different options as far as controllers. Waiting on Flex-a-lite to let me know if their controller will handle all the amps the Spal will pull without frying it.

This may be a dumb question, but if you have a fan in front pushing 2900 cfm,and one in back pulling 2900 cfm, wouldn't you still have only 2900 cfm passing through the radiator area or am I missing something?
I mounted my fan to the stock shroud with some aluminum brackets I made so that the fan is about 1 1/2 inch away from the radiator, seems to pull much more effeciently than being up against the radiator where it only pulls a 16 inch circle of air.

Alan,
A lot of the fans such as the dual spal and Black magic come with shrouds and sit back from the radiator some to pull air from a larger area.

YA,
I think I've got a pretty good idea of the wiring. The way I see it is you have a relay on each fan and a thermo sensor which activates the relay to turn the fan on. Basically the thermo sersor when up to temperature, sends 12v to the relay which turns it on. My only question is how the A/C switch plays a part in this. Can I run the activation wire to the same spot on the fan relays and not fry the temperature unit? Will the temperature unit sending 12v and the A/C unit sending 12v cause a problem with the relay? Or the one that really puzzles me, if the temp unit sends 12v to the relay will this 12v be also sent to the A/C and kick it on? I'm having to buy individaul temp and A/C parts so I'm not sure the wiring quite yet.

On a positive note I did install a 180 degree thermostat and new hoses last week and boy what a difference. When I'm running the heck out of the truck it doesn't get as hot as it did under normal conditions with the stock thermostat. Under normal conditions it runs super cool and the A/c blows a little cooler and the fan clutch kicks on less. I love it!

This is the set up I run. Scroll down to the diagram. There is also a parts list including sources for the parts.

Enjoy.

Also, if I read your post correctly, with a twin Spal both fans MUST run at the same time. Running only one allows air from the engine compartment to be pulled through the fan opening that is not running.

After seeing that I found this:

Near the bottom of the page is a replacement electric fan for the Viper with shroud!
It's gotta pull a lot of air to keep the Viper cool. It's 17" too. What do ya'll think of that, worth a shot?
Its only $160!

c crowder,

Do a search about elec fans on this forum. Alot of posts on this subject.

You don't need any other fans on your truck unless you have EXTREME conditions.

My 01 QC 4.7 5spd, etc. etc. has had the belt fan and clutch off nearly a year. Since then, and a 180 t-stat, the gauge has NEVER been over half way, and usually just inside the bracket on the gauge.

You'll really like the HP and response increase!

Before you ask, just spray the large nut in the center off the shaft with some solvent. Get a large wrench that size, I used a pipe wrench, and a short piece of 2x4 placed on the end of the wrench, one good tap with a hammer, and the whole assembly spins right off. Don't take off any shrouds! Just take a few seconds and slip it out from the top.

If you EVER want to use it again,(I did for a trip to the dealer once), just takes 2 secs, slip it back in and turn iton hand tight. Start engine, turn of the engine keeps it tight.

Get rid of it, you'll be glad you did.

P.S. I live in the Houston/Galveston area, Houston traffic is no problem with the temperature, or my 5-spd for that matter.
I just had major reconstructive surgery on my LEFT knee, and I've been driving no problem, with my clutch, for 3 weeks now, surgery was 4 weeks ago.
