I have a 2002 dakota 4.7 reg cab and I want to do a custom exshaust to it. The only headers I have heard of are JBA and Gibson's. Are there any more and which offer the best performance. I want to do true duals. I am going to run off the headers to a free flow cat. Then to a muffler and dumb it after the rear axle on both sides. What kind of muffler has the best performance and sound? Will this allow for enough back pressure, and will the performance gain be worth it?

You'll lose power with a dual setup. Remember you have 3 cats as well. JBA's are supposed to be about the best. Carsound makes good free-flow cats 2.5" and 3". Flowmaster SUV 50 series or 70 series single in/out 3" with 4" tip is probably your best bet for performance. With duals the exhaust fumes fight to get out. You could go ahead and have your 3rd cat removed. This won't trigger any lights. Many have said this helped alot. I have a 2000 with only 1 cat though. I'm going to have a 3" car-sound cat and 3" single in/out 70 series system built for me. good luck.

So you think the best would be to go with JBA Headers a y pipe and then ?two? Free flow cats to a flowmaster muffler dumped after the rear axle?

If you go with headers, replace the factory cats with 1 aftermarket high flow cat and use a good muffler then you may see some improvement in the med. - high end performance. Simply changing out your muffler will not make much of a difference and going with true duals will only help highway performance.

True duals doesn't really help modern day cars that much, you want to keep the velocity high so the exhaust can push itself out quickly instead of tumbling around inside the pipes. If you really insist on duals then go with 2.5" pipe and use an X pipe. But the single 3" will sound and perform much better.

OK then
JBA cermaic coated headers with a y pipe(I belive three inch) to one Free Flow Cat and three inch pipe to a flowmaster 50 sereis dumped after the rear axle. How does that sound to you guys? Also will I need to buy some 02 simulators or will I be fine?

If you have the pre-cats then you will need the o2 simms box. But you may just hook up the headers and catback and not worry about the cats for now. I hated my flowmaster 50 dumped, it got annoying.

On the note of how it will sound:.....The 4.7 has a pretty awesome 'growl' to it as it is; however, I've heard a number of guys who dumped theirs either directly out of the muffler (illegal if before the axel),,or right behind the axel. It sounded pretty nasty,,almost ricey. Everyone who did rather regreted it.
I'm not saying it will hurt performace,,,it may be your preference,,but IMO it didn't sound good at all. I believe the extra piping out of the mufflers to the back of the vehicle (if large enough) isn't going to play a major factor in performance,,if at all. BUT,,this extra piping will provide more resonance and more pleasing exhaust note. (My opinion only here!)

The fact is a flowmaster will NOT sound or perform well with a short/dumped tailpipe. I had my old flowmaster 50 both ways and it makes a huge difference in sound and performance. Chambered mufflers rely on a longer tailpipes to help exhuast gases exit quickly. If you dump it then the air gets to tumbling and can't escape the chambers quickly and cleanly. So you get a raspy whooshing sound, and it sucks!

In Texas, the law is tailpipes must be after the cab, so it's O.K. to dump it before the axle.

And you will probably gain 10hp at the most, if that.

If I get 10 hp It might be worth it then. But a ricey sound, I don NOT want that. Umm, how about the gibson dumped anyone heard that?? It doesn't really matter actually I just want the best performance with a nice sound. So JBA Headers cermaic coated, to a freeflow cat(speedtweaks.com), to a flowmaster 50 series all the way back should ourperform most any exahust? and it will sound good??
