Subject: Y pipe IP: Logged
Message: Is there a high flow Y pipe available for a 99 3.9 dakota?? I'm getting headers soon and might as well make it high flow from engine to tail pipe. I figure this would be a good time to install it. Will i be losing out if i don't put on a high flow y pipe with the headers?

Message: I know Kenne Bell sells a y-pipe with there headers, and JBA may. JBA used too, but I don't know if they do anymore. Hope this helps. If you had a muffler shop locally that does mandrel bends, they could probably make you a free-flowing one.

Message: Without a larger y-pipe you kinda' defeat the purpose of headers. Yes, you will expel the gases faster with the headers, but the smaller y-pipe will choke it back down. For the best flow you should have the same size (i.d.) y-pipe as the inside of the header.

It depends on what you want out of your Dak. If you put on a new Y-pipe you'll lose a considerable amount of backpressure (aka low end), but you'll have gains in mid-range and top end.
I took the Y-pipe off my '99 3.9 and had a 2 1/4" mandrel bent installed along with a Carsound cat. My Dak screams now after 2800 rpm, but off the line I can feel a loss.
