Subject: 2001 4.7 cat ? IP: Logged
Message: Just wanted to ask, on all the 4.7 equipped dakotas (2 or 4 wd) does the output end of the 3rd cat have a bend in it or is it just like that on the 4wd models? Do 2wd dakota's have a crossmember right at the output end of the 3rd cat? Also do all dakota's have slip together exhaust pipes? I saw on a jeep with the 4.7 that it looked like it uses flanges ( I saw this where the cat is connected)? Thanks

Message: Slip together... sorta, hehe.
It is just slipped together, but it has this crease in it that makes it almost impossible to just pull apart by hand -- trust me, I tried. It was after 11 and very dark, cold and windy...I wish I saw it a lot earlier.
I do not know what you mean by a bend in the third cat either, not one that I've ever seen.
"Do 2wd dakota's have a crossmember right at the output end of the 3rd cat?"
It's somewhere around that area, but I am not for certain. I'm replacing my 3rd cat with a high flow cat later this week. I can tell you then..

Message: What I meant by a bend after the 3rd cat is that if you were to remove the 3rd cat it wouldn't be a straight pc of pipe going from the inlet of the cat to the pipe after the cat looks like their's a slight bend I guess to clear the crossmember. I hear you about the crease in the pipe, it's caused from the factory tighting the clamps down very tight. When I did my cat-back I had to use a dremel tool with a cut off wheel to make 2 cuts lengthways in order to get the pipe apart. What muffler/exhaust r u running?

Message: Just went out & looked at mine ('02 reg cab 2wd) & it looks like it actually bends down a little right after the cat, runs straight for about 8" then bends back up to the muffler. No crossmember nearby. I put a 3" Gibson cat back on it Friday & I'm still sore from wrestling that thing out of there. Took alot of WD40, wiggling & pulling, but I got it out in one piece (muffler & tail pipe), no cutting.

Message: Hey Hardbody, you didn't mention what bodystyle you have, mine is a 2wd QC and the 3rd cat sits right above the tranny crossmember. The way I did mine was I used a sawzall to cut the pipe right at the welds of the cat and took a piece of replacement pipe (2 1/2") and put it in place of the cat. The pipe already has the flair at one end so all u need is a is a 2 1/2" connector to mate the new piece back to the old on the other. Just slip everything together and clamp it. This was all done before the bend and even worked out that the replacement pipe was the same length as the cat. Total bill from the parts store was $12.00. The hardest and most time-consuming part of the project was removing and reinstalling the tranny crossmember. Be carefull removing it because mine was wedged between the framerails and when I finally worked it out it sprang down and damn near broke my wrist!! Hope this helps.

Message: OK, mines a cc 4x4, the only problem I had when I removed the factory exhaust to install the flowmaster kit is that for a few seconds I had a "brain freeze" moment and I cut the pipe in the wrong place, too far forward!! I rigged it together using the extra pc of pipe from the kit and an 18" pc from the auto parts store, than I ordered the pipe I cut from the dealer, it was actually cheaper from the dealer than to have a local muffler shop make the pipe for me! What kind of difference did removing the cat make on your truck? what muffler/exhaust are you running? And how does it sound? I was thinking about just leaving the cat alone and replacing the 50 suv muffler with either a 40 series or 40 deltaflow. What dio you think?

Message: I'm running the Gibson single-exit system. I'm not familiar with the flowmasters on our trucks. I had a pair of 2 chambers on my Aspen R/T and was pleased with them on that but didn't want the harmonic drone that they seem to emit to be in the truck. The Gibson system sounds great, not real loud but very throaty and I could tell a big difference with how the truck ran afterwords. As far as the performance gains of removing the cat the only difference so far that I can tell is it seems to rev a little easier in the higher rpm's, although the auto doesn't seem to need to downshift when climbing some hills around town like it did before. I only did it last week so I don't think the pcm has had time to readjust, was thinking of diconnecting the battery and resetting, maybe would "learn" quicker. What can I say about the sound difference? Much deeper tone but doesn't get real loud untill WOT, then that's when the gates of hell are blown open! Not to bad though. LOL:)

Message: Quad 47, did your truck have a big exhaust hanger right at the back of the cat that's welded to a bracket that bolts to the tranny? Prob not cause mines a 4x4, I looked under my truck today it doesn't look like theirs a lot of room before the bend to cut the pipe after the cat ( and that welded on hanger) . the front is no problem, I'm going to start checking with some local muffler shops maybe if I remove the cat they can just make a pipe up for me, who knows

Message: Nope. The first hanger on mine is right in front of the muffler.
