Subject: 4.7L Intakes? IP: Logged
Message: Whats the general consensus on 4.7 Intakes? Is the Intense Performace Z-Tube the best intake available? Mind that I'm now a build-your-own type of guy. On my 2.5 I had an Airaid, but the 4.7 kit from them looks like sh*t. Any other suggestions? I hear that the K&N kit will be out around the end of summer.

Message: If you are a doi it your self kinda guy. Get some 3.5" mandrel bent tubing and build your own The price for a intake is just unreal. But yes I do like the looks and the potential performance of the IP Z-tube.

Message: Any of you guys heard good or bad things about the cold air option for the Z-tubes? I'm looking into an AirRaid throttle body spacer, an intake system, and then a cat back (like everyone else) and I'm wondering how the cold air compares to the regular.
Thanks,
Wedo

Message: Fisrt, save your money - TB spacers are useless according to everything I've heard. As far as the cold air option on the Z-tube, I've been looking at it, thinking it may provide, if nothing else, a little extra protection for the filter from water - water in the intake is bad.I'm not sure how much it would actually do for performance though, but I think (and I could be wrong) that its available as an add on later (ie buy the Ztube intake, install, use, buy the stage-3 add on for cold air) if you don't think just the Ztube itself is good enough. All my rattling on doesn't mean I wouldn't like to hear from someone that might have the stage 3 installed.

Message: My Z-Tube should be here today, been looking forward to it. It looks the best and from what I have read, performs better then anything out there. I almost did the home-brew version but I just can't stand the looks of it. The only downside of the Z-Tube is that the gaskets only come in blue.... This is my first performance mod to the my Dak, what can I expect from this mod?

Message: I've got the Z-tube with the cold air canister. I like it. As far as sound...louder than stock, but not as loud as an open filter would be. I used to have an open filter and it was loud. Performance...I have no numbers, but part throttle response feels snappier, and I definitely feel a bump in the power curve around 3000 RPM on up, so I'm going to assume it flows better than stock. Protection from water...yes and no: yes in terms of spraying water on the truck when I'm washing it (I see water on the canister when I pop the hood after washing); not much more (or less) protection than stock from sucking water through the fender well.

Message: So, Dan and Black Magic (when you get your Z installed) - what sort of economy gains did you see from the intake? I just ran my first full tank through my new (slightly used) truck, and managed almost 19 mpg - as far as I'm concerned the 4.7 has plenty of power for what I need it for, considering my last dak was a 2.5 - what I'm going to work on is trying to get some milage out of this engine without killing any low end torque - after all, big engines are great for cruising at low rpm, with the top there if you need it - bringing up efficency on the low end will increase overall power if it's needed, but mostly, I'm after mpg mods. Any suggestions for this other than intakes?

Message: I didn't buy the Z tube for mileage gains, so I wasn't disappointed. My mileage seems to vary only by using the AC or leaving it off. I got the Z tube because: (1) the open filter homebrew that I was running was too loud for my taste, (2) I wanted a stup that had an enclosed filter (for the noise and water reasons), and (3) I didn't want to run the stock air intake setup because when I did the body lift on my truck, that put a big kink in the stock flex hose between the stock filter box and the 4.7's air hat. That kink caused a fairly noticeable drop in performance.
Back on the gas mileage thing...my truck gets almost exactly the same mileage now as it did stock (maybe 1 mpg less on the highway, depending on AC usage), and I've done the following: 3 inch body lift, 32 inch tires (up from 31's), gibson single cat back, and a switch to 3.92 gears (from 3.55's). I get 13 city, 17 highway, 18 if I slow down and shut off the AC.

Message: The Z tube is an open element unless you buy the filter canister (which I did). The 4.7 canister encloses the filter and takes in air through a flex hose that tucks into a hole in the passenger side fenderwell. The canister for the 318/360 also takes in air through a flex hose, but it gets routed to a spot beind the grill next to the radiator.
I like my truck a little quieter than most, but wanted it a little louder than stock. I love the sound of an open air filter and dual exhausts, just not enough to live with it every day.

Message: Black Magic - you're saying the coldair kit from IP uses the stock fenderwell hole for the cold air intake? This being the case, if you want to go with the cold air intake, would you do just as well to get the K&N drop-in filter for the stock airbox? Anyone?

Message: The problem with just using a K&N drop in is your still keeping all the restrictions in the intake path, next time you take out your stock filter look at the inside of the stock air box, it's far from smooth inside, lots of ridges, In one of the mopar magazines a few issues back ( the one where they did the article about swapping the 66mm TB for the 68 mm) they said in the picture captions that if you lose the accordian hose and smooth out the area in front of the stock air hat that it's like getting free hp. The conical air filters also have more surface area which allows more air to enter the filter, ( also because theirs more surface area the filter shouldn't get dirty as quick). The factory filter setup only pulls air in thru the inner fender, with a home made, K&N, Intense perf., etc you still pull air in thru the inner fender but you can also remove the flap in the radiator support and get air flow directly from thru the grille. It's my understanding that the cold air kit from IP mounts the filter in a cannister which connects to a pc of hose that you can mount basically anywhere you want, it's designed so you can mount it in say the grille to get "cold air" from outside of the engine compartment, not sure if they sell the hose or if they do how long apc they provide.

Message: I made a homebrew intake out of PVC with the K&N cone filter for my 4.7. there is a noticable (not much but noticable)difference in throttle response and power. There is a big difference in sound you can really hear it whistling but I don't mind at all and as far as the looks go, nothing compared to the other aftermarket intakes out there, but as long as it gets the job done I'm satisfied

Message: Too all who have made a homemade intake, the company DEI ( design engineering) makes an insulated wrap that is made for air intakes, it's fiberglass inside and silver reflective on the outside, they claim a 30% drop in intake air temp, I believe it's like 36" long x 14" wide, can be trimmed installs with velcro, sounds interesting, cover home made intake, reflect underhood heat, cool incoming air, only bad thing is the price it's like $50. www.designengineering.com
