I jumped through ny a$$ last week to pick up on a good buy for Crower 1.7 ratio roller rockers for only $400 ($415 shipped). Well then I HAD to get the Mopar valve covers for clearance ($140). Then I decided that I needed the hardened push rods and guide plates to handle the 5500+ RPM that will result from my planned ECM performance flash (probably my next mod). These are gonna be about $220 shipped.

So.... I'm spending about $775 for the 1.7 RRs and haven't even got them installed!!! I'm either going to attempt the install myself or I know a Dodge Dealer mechanic that wants a Jet Chip. I may try to trade his install labor for my extra Stage 1.

I guess if I get 15 hp at the rear wheels, it will be worth it. Also, I've heard the Crower SS roller rockers are good for life.

Anybody have any good comments to make me feel better????

You bought the best in the business... I can save you a few $$$ on the guideplates/pushrods... $190+shipping (about $12-15 depending on where you live). Installation is pretty easy-- you'll need some red loctite... remove all the old rockers before dark, install the studs w/loctite-- torque to 25 ft. lbs... Let them sit up overnight, then complete the install the following morning. I can walk you through the install if you like. Once you understand the proceedure, it's pretty easy.

Expect about 12 hp and 20-25 ft. lbs. increase (coming on strong at 3000 rpm on a 5.9L)

Well this will probably make you feel worse, but you really need the HP valve springs as well for the higher RPMs. Then you really will be set for high rpms. The biggest gain IMO is not the roller tips but the 1.7:1 ratio which effectively gives you a bigger cam. If I could get just stamped 1.7's for about the same price as repalcement stamped 1.6's then I'd probably go for them. Otherwise a new cam is a much less expensive way to get the lift but you have to do the install yourself, or the rockers probably would be less. Either way you go I think it is a worthy mod.

Heavier springs aren't needed. Only if you plan to run way into the 5500+ range for extended periods. The 1.7s alone make power in the same range as a stock 1.6 friction rocker. I shift at 5300 rpm all day long with stock springs/cam/heads. Put the rockers on at 14k and have now 58k on the truck (44k on the 1.7s). No problems at all. If you plan on going with new heads, then do the springs. If you run above 5500 rpm (get the guide plates/pushrods)... If you plan on going above 5500 for extended periods (more than just a blast up to 6000 rpm) then the springs are recommended. They are good insurance, but you don't need them for the applications I listed.

Thanks for the replys!!

Aaro - Jegs has the polished covers for $125.99 + 7.99 Handling.

rtdkota - Sam I ordered the guide plates direct from Crower but they are "in production" and won't be available until until 5/17/02. That will probably suit my schedule. How much do you sell just the push rods for? I assume the 6.95" hardened rods (Crower # 69695) are the ones to get??

Thanks

Bill

Can you still use 1.7's with a aftermarket cam or do they only work with the stock cam? Also dont you have to ajust roller rockers all the time because they get loose? Sorry one more thing, how do you stop the motor from starting so you can crank the motor to get the rockers all the way up to install them?
Thanks Alot!!!

Rob: I blew my engine a little over a month ago (installed Mopar 1.7's but found that they were too much for the cam I have installed). The old Crower 1.6's are back on the engine again.

Eazy: Yes, you can use the 1.7's with an aftermarket cam...but it depends on how big the cam is. You'll need to cut the guides about .010" shorter on cams with a lift of .510" or higher (this also depends on if the cam was ground for 1.5 or 1.6:1 rockers).

Those are the correct pushrods... Email me and I can get you the price tonight. I am waiting on the guide plates (for my motor as well as a few orders).

--

1.7s work great on stock cam, and can be used on aftermarket (but you need to get the geometry as Bernd mentioned. I am about to install a cam specifically made for 1.7 ratio rockers from Crower... Going to need longer pushrods than the 6.950" units... Once I get this tested, it MIGHT become a real part number (it's a .512/.512 cam-- but designed with more low-mid range, with good top end...) We will see how it goes.

Has anyone ever used the crower cams part #34419
with .528/.549 lift? Im planing on getting this cam for my 5.2, along with mopar perf parts 1.6 roller rocker kit. Bernd says the valve guide must be cut .010 , is this for cleaence reasons of the crower rocker design? I dont know what brand (crane I think) is used in the mopar perf parts kit. Also crower ask for a double valvespring, I was hoping to use the mopar single springs part #4876062, anyone with any info on this would be very helpfull.

NOSGASMAN,

The clearance bernd was taking about is the valve guide-valve spring retainer. If you put on a large enough cam and higher ratio rocker arms on your motor. The higher lift would cause the spring retainer to hit the guide and something will break(pushrod, rocker arm stud, rocker arm, valve, maybe even the head itself)
