Subject: RTV for header install? IP: Logged
Message: I am installing my JBA headers hopefully friday and have all the tools and stuff i need except for RTV.
I went to the autostore and that crap makes zero sense.
I looked at Ultra Gray, Ultra Copper, and Ultra Black they all say high temp but not how high one had a temperature but that was only "intermittent" rating. the only temps i saw were between 600-700 degrees, is that enough?
Is the only difference to color. Seems as if that one company makes the same crap in different colors to make more money, Oh yeah if you put the word "ultra" in front of the color that adds $1
Help

Message: Geoff, what is RTV? I got my mechanic to install mine, the only thing that I picked up were a gasket and some header bolts. He used Loctite on the bolts.

Message: The JBA instrustions said to use RTV (that silicone liquid gasket stuff) on the coupling between the header collector and the Y-pipe. I guess it is supposed to ensure a good seal

Message: Hey Geoff. I just talked to my mechanic, he said that putting RTV on would be a waste as it would just blow out. He uses copper gaskets on his race cars, mine has just regular gaskets on and is fine.

Message: Cool thanks I'll go ahead and skip it and see what happens. I fyou happen to talk to him again would you mind asking how to determine if there is a leak after the install. Is it real obvious?

Message: On headers with ball type collectors I've always used a little Ultra Copper RTV on the flange. The problem is that sometimes the aftermafrket headers and factory Y pipe don't have the flanges made exactly the same way and you will have a small leak. I decided to skip the RTV once when I was putting headers on a '96 Formula and had to tear it back apart on a Friday afternoon before the customer could pick it up.

Message: I used the ultra copper RTV at the slip fit of the crossover tube for my Mopar Performance header install.
I think it's just a little added insurance and for $5 why not.

Message: I've used Ultra Copper also although not at the collector. I've smeared a thin bead on the header gasket. Yes do replace the gasket that comes with the JBAs with a good one. Even so I stll have used the scilicone as insurance of a good seal.

Message: Geoff, Do not put any sealant where the headers mate to the head. Use the gaskets it came with and nothing else. Where the collector mates to the exhaust pipe use the copper sealant. The copper sealant may not be necessary but I put it on anyway so I wouldn't have to take it apart again. The copper sealant was one of those"just in case" type deals.

Message: I ve been throwing all gaskets in the trash can and only
running rtv silicon for the past 15 year on blower and turbo
motors and never have blow outs. Put a 1/8 in bead around
all the header flanges and tighten the bolts finger tight. Come
back in a few hours and torque them down. Your headers will
never leak again even after 1000 miles of baja. Enjoy
