Subject: disconnect alternator at the track IP: Logged
Message: I saw in a magazine where a tpi f-body picked up two tenths by disconnecting the alternator. He still had the stock belts, but disconnected the electrical connection to the alternator. How would this have helped and would it work on our trucks?

Message: Well, it pretty much removes the load on the alternator, and in turn the engine. But it puts a -lot- of strain on the battery, you wouldn't want to run it like that for long... Maybe zip down the track and reconnect the alternator, let it charge, then do it again. Your probally going to shorten the life span of the battery though

Message: I doubt that it would hurt your battery to go 1/4 at a time with no charge!! I once drove a car 64-94 miles per day off of the battery alone. I bought a spare battery and I would charge them each night. In the morning I would put one under the hood and the other in the hatch area. If one died I would swap it out. At night time if there were no cars around I would turn my headlamp off to save energy. I would turn them on the second I saw light comeing over a hill. That was pack in 1997 I did this for two weeks. I was driveing an 1982 Toyota starlet and alot of places in Mi. either could not get me an alternator ordered or they wanted $300 +++ dollars for one. I called my mom and dad in gerogia and the sent me one from GA. Thei Autozone had them in stock and only wanted $58.00. I still have one battery that is just fine and the other one is on it's last leg.

Message: Probally not a 1/4 at a time, but over the course of time, your going to do some damage to it. May take it a while, but it'll happen. But if your looking for that extra 1/10th of a second... Hey, I'm not going to stop you. But if I see -anyone- near my truck with a pair of plyers... :0)

Message: It will not hurt your battery to run a few minutes without the alternator charging. The alternator only charges for a little while after starting the engine.

Message: True, Handi, but then the engine runs off the alternator not the battery. Remove the alternator, and you start drawing on the battery, which generally isn't designed for it.
I just wouldn't recommend it. If you want to try it, go ahead. Good luck. Take jumper cables to be safe.

Message: You could run all day (or more)
without the alternator. Just make sure you have a good battery.
A quarter mile will not be any problem. But if you have a fully charged battery I don't see how the alternator will be draging any power from your engine.

Message: I know quite a few people who drag with no alternator. One guy has run with no belts and has one belt that just drives the water pump. It can't be that bad unless you have all of the stuff on in the truck. But if almost everything is off it shouldn't hurt too much. if you try to do that with your A/C on and everything else it might cause problems.

Message: Here's an idea, unhook the power steering pump too. I mean, your going in a straight line... probally good for a good 1/10th...

Message: I've heard of running with no belts, but I'm not going to try it. Is there anyone who knows someone who runs with no alternator at the track? What other free stuff can I do (AT THE TRACK) to cut e.t.s?

Message: Ok, from my observations at the track people will run a few times.(I'm there on "Test and Tune Night") Get everything "warmed" up a bit I guess. See what they're running. They may then go without a few things in terms of belts. Then if they wanna max it they take 'em all off. But they don't to it lazily. When the guy made his ONE run with no water pump he brought it back to the pits quick and it was turned off for a few mintutes and then the belt was reinstalled and it idled for a bit to bring everything back down where it should be. But they were paying very close attention the whole time.

Message: Todd the vechile does not run off the alternator directly. The vechiles battery as as a huge capitor filtering the power. The alternator makes AC cuurent and they use diodes to limit the direction that the electrons are allowed to flow creating a DC compatiable chargeing sytem that is very efficient compared to a DC generator. The problem is that automitive alternators are not true DC and they produce very noisey power with alot of surges and variation in freq. So they filter it through the battery to clean it up. If you run a dc device directly of the output of the alternator it will drasticly shorten it's life and it will not perform at it's best especialy if it is electronic!!!!

Message: The short belt routing for my 4.7 bypasses the power steering and alternator. Losing both of those pulleys and also running without the clutch fan will result in about 3 tenths of a second change on a timeslip. If you are running at night and have to run the lights, you need the battery recharged after about 4 or 5 passes. If you are running during the day and not running any electrical accessories like the electric fan then you can run all day without the alternator. As far as it shortening the life of a battery? I've never noticed it effecting battery life one way or the other.
Warning! Always remember that without the power steering pump running that you will have to use a lot more muscle to turn the truck.... especially if you aren't moving very fast.

Message: Is it all about the one time run..or being faster the next time??? Or the next guy?? You wanna run at the strip or on the street...they are not the same. I could leave my whole bed at home, put a lexan 'shield' that goes from my hood to the top of my windshied and that would be 'faster'.. but I doubt the local cops would let you race on the street w/ that... hehe! Pick an avenue you want to do, be realistic and go w/ it, unless of course you have the time and energy to modify/un-modify your truck everytime you go from street to strip. Just my opinion!! And like all venturis, it prolly sucks!!!
