Does anyone use a short belt at the track? This is an old trick, but it should work.
Although this is popular, I haven't been able to find one for my 94 CC 5.2 auto. Does anyone know of a belt that will cut out the alternator, A/C, etc.?

Message: i dont believe you would want to run your truck without the alternator. you can get a shorter belt with no a/c at autozone, napa, pepboys......but i tried to get one for my truck and it was about an inch to short? might be b/c i have under drive pulleys but that shouldnt make a difference seeing how the normal belt fits fine.

Message: why wouldnt you disconnect your alternator? I just saw how a tpi f body gained two tenths by just disconnecting the alternator, and that was with the stock belt.

Message: On my truck, there is a belt diagram that shows with and without A/C routings.I was thinking about getting a belt to bypass the A/C at the track. Would I gain a tenth or so just by doing this, after all the A/C pulley is pretty big.

Message: I had a short belt on my 93 that bypassed the A/C and the power steering. It went off and on really easy with one wrench on the tensioner. I can't remember exactly how long it was but it would have worked in about a 1" range. I'd say take the factory belt off and run some of that taylor's measuring tape around how the new belt would go. The take off about 1" to put tension on it. The belts are sold by their part number which somehow includes the lengt and width. Just look up your factory belt's number and measure it's length, then figure out what the short belts part number should be and find the closest thing. It seemed to work well on my 93. I did a bunch of freebie mods like this, and added the mP PCM and dropped a full second off my 1/4 mile times. The best runs were about 14.9 sec.

Message: The 93 had a round air cleaner which you could flip the lid over on and get less restriction (but maybe hotter). I dropped the entire exhaust behind the cat. This saved weight and effectively gave me a free high flow cat back system. I removed the spair, rear bumper, tailgate, and jack. I'd bring a bag of ice to ice down the beer barrel between runs. I'd air up the front tires to max or even 5-10 pounds above max, and keep the rear tires at recommended pressure (I'm under the impression that airing down factory radials will ruin the contact patch and hurt traction.) The short belt (which actually does cost something but under $10.) I also spent $40 on new plug wires, $10 on a used K&N drop in, and about $40 on an accell coil. I bought the MP PCM for about $250, and I did end up swapping some older 235/60/15's street tires on the back I had laying around to improve the rear gear ratio (It was a 3.55 truck), and keep from tearing up the stock tires. I think they hurt traction as they were pretty used up. It was really consistant at that point and ran 3 weeks in a row, at least 3 runs a week in the 14.90-15.05 range at about 92 MPH in different conditions. If I had better reaction times maybe I'd actually won something! I never did do anything like remove the clutch fan, or put in a 180 degree T-stat, adjust the timing pickup, or move the IAT. I didn't even know about stuff like that. Back in 93 there wasn't too many people doing magnum stuff, let alone running a pickup. I was at Sears Point in a sea of 5.0 Mustangs, and could run well with the automatic ones. The redesigned Z28 and Firebirds were just out and smoking everybody though.

Message: What in the hell are all of your problems? Leave the belts alone and do real mods that work on the street. Say someone pulls up next to you at a street light and says they wanna race . . are you gonna pop the hood, jump out and change your belts? The only thing that should be changed at the track is maybe tires/slicks. Just race the damn thing like it is. Buy a SuperCharger if you wanna shave seconds. Stop the nonsense . . besides . . you look like an idiot under the hood of a 15 sec truck anyways.

and what about guys like me that don't race on the street? I do all of my racing on the track where I don't have to wurry about sombody pulling out in the front of me. You can call it nonsnse but I call it racing. Maybe your to lazy to do things like that? Free mods are good for us people that dont have a lots of money.

Message: I don't beleive the stock PCM disengages the a/c at WOT, this is something the MP PCM adds, but it is not on the stock unit. Still, there is effort to spin the a/c even disengaged, and a bunch more to run the power steering.

Message: I have done fairly extensive dyno testing on my truck.
The viscous fan takes 5 rwhp to drive.
The alternator and power steering pump take 17 rwhp to drive.
The combination of the fan, alternator and power steering pump take 22 rwhp to drive - or 26 flywheel horsepower!
I remove my fan and run a short belt on my truck for a 2.5 tenths improvement at the track. Sure it's a little tougher to drive the truck..... but I need the exercise anyway! hahaha

Message: I own a '00 3.9L V6. I'm not a racer but was wondering if anyone knows how much better bypassing the A/C pulley works for normal driving. (seeing as how I never use the A/C anyway) I want to get a Cold air intake and bypass the A/C so I can tow a trailer across the country without putting too much stress on what I consider to be a slightly weak engine. How much would this help? Or am I just wasting my money?

Message: My experience. I run a short belt (bypasses a/c and power steering) at the track and this drops my ETs by almost 2/10s everytime. I have also run with no belt but only under these conditions ... no higher than 50F air temp. and no waits in the staging lanes. I have seen a na R/T run with no belt in 60F temps at Cecil and set a pb of 13.64. Bypassing the water pump frees up the largest amount of hp. No belt has dropped my bottom 1/8th by 1/10 and top 1/8 by 2/10s over previous pbs with my short belt.

Message: Yea short belts work. I've notcied about 2 tenths quicker with my short belt and about another tenth over the short belt by dropping the belt altogether. It's tricky to drop the belt though. Have a track where you can push to the start. Then fire up right before your burnout, burn em and then stage. Once you hit the end of the 1/4 shut down and cruise to the end and put your belt back on. It doesn't get that hot. It works though.
