Subject: Cool Fuel IP: Logged
Message: About a week ago, a friend dropped an '84 Jag XJS V-12 off at my place, to see if I could "get it running right".
To make a long story short, This engine is a mechanic's nightmare! Just to get to the plugs, you have to pull out the fuel rails, etc.
Anyway, I saw something interesting. Some rocket scientist at Jaguar had the idea of using the AC line to cool the fuel lines!
Well, we all know that the 3.9/5.2/5.9s in our rigs run like crap when it's hot out, right?
Doing a search on this site, I see that Bernd was thinking along the same lines (at least in respect to intake temp).
Didn't a few Dak owners also have probs with their fuel rails getting super hot (like 300 f)?
Well, it was in the 90's again in Jersey last night, so I decided to see how the heat effected my DAK.
I did some Gtech runs a month ago for comparison, and managed to turn a best of 15.43@89 mph. The best I could do last night (at first) was 15.90-16.20s at 85!
I decided to place some blocks of "Blue Ice" on the intake manifold, around the Fuel rails. After a breif cool-off period, I ran a 15.80. I then made sure that the Blue Ice blocks were as cool as possible, and also made sure that they were wedged against the rails. Result? 15.70s.
Granted, this is unscientific as hell, but maybe we're on to something here.
I'd like to see some other people try this, and post their findings.

Message: It is common for high-speed runs at the salt flats to have a cooler of ice that cools the intake air and fuel for the run.
I realize in the 1/4 mile, that weight is an issue and the weight of all of that ice may actually slow you down.

Two tenths is a very impressive gain just from cooling the fuel, IMO. Maybe design a 'cool can' that the fuel line spirals through pressurized by the AC.

Message: i have my gas lines wrapped with a 1/4" cooling wire, in a twisting motion. damn thing took days to do. ill post a pic if you want.
I think it gives more hp, but that darned 6'X4' refrigerator that the cooling lines are attached to really adds to the weight, not to mention the bigger altenator needed to run it.
here the pic:

Message: That is really common in motocross. The pro teams are wrapping their fuel lines to keep the fuel cold longer. Some teams (Honda) even have aluminium gas tanks to reduce heat issues. I read it doesnt produce power, but it lets you keep power longer. It will be faster becuase the fuel is colder for a longer period of time.

Message: I was asking around about this earlier and the general concensus was it was a waste of time for a modern EFI engine and was more beneficial for older carbed engines but now I hear this I don't know maybe I'll actually try it. I was going to wrap the fuel feed around the cold side of the lines from the AC compressor.
Who knows.

Message: I'm not trying to be a wise guy, but this isn't a scientific breakthrough. I was putting bags of ice around my fuel rails/manifold before a run on my 87 Grand National since 1987! Indeed, I got 2-3 tenths better. It was a Kenne Bell suggestion and it worked. Have fun.

Message: JAL, Jaguar was doing this in 1984 (and probably since 1975, the first year of the XJS). I wonder where Kenne Bell got the idea from? :-)
Also, "Cool Cans" for carbed engines have been around since the late 60's early 70's.
I'm sure that plenty of people have been guilty 'reinventing the wheel', but as I said, it was a shot in the dark to see how much of an improvement was possible on the Dak.

Message: yeah but if the cold fuel thing works then there are another three tenths. That would be a whole 6 tenths with the airhat too and that would really make a difference.

Message: Got 'em, thanks Fubar. Just goes to show if you have got an Idea that you think will work you can't always rely on what other people think of it. You gotta have faith that your reasoning is sound and press on.
Now I have to see how much it's gonna cost to fix my AC. :(

The green line is with the fuel rail cooling system turned on. 242.2 rwhp 322.5 rwtq
The red line is with the fuel rail cooling system turned off. 228.3 rwhp 298.0 rwtq
14 hp and 24 ft-lbs of torque is the difference with cool fuel.
The ideal situation is to have the system working all the time, not just when you have an ice bag laying on top of the fuel rail or in the cool can. My fuel rail cooling system uses a 12 volt pump that circulates water to cool the fuel rails and uses the AC system for the cooling source. As long as you are running the AC anyway, you can have cool fuel.

Message: I have two 3/8 copper lines on top of each fuel rail and wrapped in insulation. I modified my windsheild washer pump to a switch and run a closed system from the resovoir threw the copper tubes and back into the resovoir.
put some ice in the resovoir and there is a noticable difference.
