Message: colder.....
a simple 10 min tweak and wwwooooowwwww my face still hurts from my 5 minute ride home best thing i ever did to my A/C....
all you have to do is remove the 5/8 heater hose from water pump (driver side going to passenger compartmnt) and reroute it back with a 3 feet extension 5/8 hose to the other side (passenger side back to the radiator) so the hot water circulates in a closed loop in the engine and not inside the truck A/C vents.

Message: I put a valve in line with the heater hose, so the hot water could not reach the heater core. This way in the winter you can just turn it on.
BTW- I did this in my old ford, haven't tried it in the dodge, but it worked.

Message: Yep, that's the oldest trick in the book. I had to do it to the old 'Cuda when the heater core was leaking and I was too lazy to change it. Glad to hear that it works to make the a/c colder. Never thought of that!
Now I'll have to see if it'll work on the 4.7.

Message: I think it was recommended (by CW?)to re-route the heater core line off of the intake manifold inthe 4.7 (they both sit right on the intake and get real hot). I was planning on this mod to keep the manifolf heat down. May just have to include this valve ideal or maybe a bypass..

Message: I would use a brass ball valve and then use the barbed hose fittings, brass also. SS hose clamps.
Any plumbing supply or marine supply. Maybe Home Depot.

Message: Now the coolant that just sits there in your heater core won't rot the h-core or go bad? any concern with failure in the future?
I'm game to do mine if I know it won't cause any problems

Message: It's normal automotive design practice to allow at least some coolant flow through the heater core at all times to prevent deposits and subsequent corrosion.
So the valve idea seems like a good compromise because you could open it once per month or so and "let it flow" to flush out the deposits in the heater core.

Message: A lot of car-parts stores have these valves, but even if you get a good one they will corrode so change them out every few years when you flush if you notice they are getting bad.
Leaving the valve closed for a few months a year will not hurt your heater just remember to flush it once in a while.

Message: Don't forget that lack of circulation is the number one cause of heater core failure. Heater cores tend to 'rot' out faster when there is no circulation of coolant through them. This is one of the reasons that coolant is circulated through them when the heater isn't on.

Message: so you are saying to cut the hose going to heater core and mount a 3way ball valve in line and then routing the other end of the valve back to the radiator? so all you have to do is turn the vavle in the winter?

Message: Just a plan valve that is in-line with the heater intake hose. You don't have to bypass anything just block off the flow to the core.
I have had one in my 83 Ford for 13 years and the heater core is still fine. Just remember to flush it every so often.

Message: Can I assume you ALLREADY did the other AC mod?
On my 2000 4.7LV8, there was absolutely no insulation on the ACpiping under the hood. I bought some pipe insulation at HomeDepot and slipped all low-pressure (cold) pipes. I also added stick-on insulaton tape to the reciever (big metal cannister that used to sweat)
Even without the re-routing of heater-core hoses, I get more cold air.
If re-reouting heater-core makes that much difference for you, suspect that somthing is not properly sealing in the ductwork under the dash.

Message: Not a good idea to insulate the suction line. (cold line before the compressor). That line should be exposed so that any refrigerant not 'boiled'in the evaporator, will be boiled to vapor before it reaches the compressor. If liquid gets in the compressor, BOOM! no more compressor.

Message: Actually, if you want to improve the performance of the system, for the systems sake, the more heat removed from the liquid line, from the condenser to the evaporator, the better performance from the system. Improving air flow through the condenser and if possible in your system, positioning the line from the evap to the comp and the line from the cond to the evap together will create a heat exchanger. Any remaining liquid in the suction line will boil off and the liquid going to the evap will loose heat to the suction line. If they are close enough, place them together, smear mastic grease (heat transfer grease) between the lines (metal parts preferably), wrap with metal tape, and insulate. This will also reduce high side pressure which will let the compressor work less.
