Message: How much HP do some of you have running with the stock trans? How much power can it hold? Is there a good aftermarket trans to get? What have you done to the trans to beef it up?
Thanks

Message: There are guys pushing over 400hp through the stock tranny on R/T's. The tranny itself is pretty strong, but the valve body and OD unit are weak links.

Message: So what is the limit of pwr a stock 45RE (Is that the trans. name for the tranny behind 2WD 4.7's?)
How many ponies can be putting out before I need to look at tranny upgrades/replacement?

Message: Well the 45rfe is the transmission that DC has selected to put behind the new 5.7 Hemi in all of the cars and trucks!!!!! It is strong enought to be put in a half ton Quad Cab Ram!! I am guessing it is good enough for our Dak's.

Message: The real question is not whether it can hold up to the horsepower, but how long it will last if you beat on it. If you do a lot of mods to your engine and you race, or beat on the truck it will eventually kill the tranny. One of the best tranny mods you can do (besides a shift kit) is an aftermarket add-on tranny cooler. Dropping the tranny temp 20 or 30 degrees has been proven to double the length of a tranny.

Message: Duner doesn't seem to be having any problems. 400+hp there. Takes a smart driver to help not hurt things with that HP.

Message: HSKR: The valve body and overdrive unit are easliy modified to handle the HP (and upgrading the factory overdrive unit to the 5 pinion/15 degree unit (O/D planet, O/D sungear, O/D annulus gear & bearing) isn't a hard job (but does require rebuilding the transmission. Adding some better clutches doesn't hurt either. Then there's fixing that nagging 1-2 reverse band problem (goes all the way back to the 727/904)...again, easily fixed. HP/TQ wise, you should be more concerned with the factory TQ converter than the internals. Nothing worse than a TQ converter letting go with 400HP+ a the crank.
BTW: The 45RFE "shift kits" are coming very soon as well.

Message: I agree with bernd, if you start pumping out more hp in an auto change the converter,or you end up doing what i did in my monte carlo an blow the converter up car don't move good if ya do that. Plus converter can help put more power down to the ground.

Message: One thing I wanted to add to Bernds post. I wanted to add that useing a good synthetic tranny fluid with C++++ rateings can lower trans. temps 15-30 degrees. If you combine this with a trans. cooler you can extend your the trany's life under all conditions.

Message: Just a note about the 45rfe behind the new 5.7 hemi. I have heard it is a modified 45rfe that they will be using so they will probably change the name to reflect that. Technically the first 2 numbers relate to the strength of an automatic Dodge transmission, so according to dodge the 46RE is stronger then a 45RFE by a little bit, and both are stronger then a 42RE.
