Message: Did the install this weekend on my 2001 QC. I started on Firday night (3 hours) and finished on Saturday (6 hours).
Yes, it took me 9 hours. That includes getting everything ready (tools, parts, light, garage, etc) and cleaning up all the mess, tools, etc.
I also had a couple of small extra "unplanned" projects thrown in. I twisted of a bolt that holds the AC compressor and I removed and painted the bracket that holds the radiator hose up over the engine. (This bracket came painted "gold" from factory. I painted it black). These 2 extra projects only took maybe an additional 30 minutes.
I did the whole install all by myself without any help and it was a really fun job. I cleaned my engine (I always keep it clean anyway) before the project and I didn't even get very dirty. I wore the "Mechanix gloves" and don't have any scrathes or scrapes.
Thanks to everyone who posted their "tips" on this install. I read many of those tips, other instructions and the Mopar instructions before I started. It sure made the install go well.
I would like provide this input:
Use wadded up paper towels in the intake ports in the heads when scraping off the old gasket materials. This keeps most trash out. I also used oil soaked Q tips to clean out remaining trash from the intake ports. Clean Q tips were helpful in getting trash out of the water jackets.
You must have good lighting, a magnetic retrieving tool (for dropped tools and bolts) and a Torque wrench.
I soldered the required electrical extention for the intake air temperature sensor and covered this wire with a black plastic wire loom cover. Looks like a factory install.
I can't believe someone has done this project in 2 - 3 hours!!! It took me an hour just to prepared the surfaces for the new gaskets!!!!
I really haven't been able to adequately test the performance yet. So far it seems the low end (from a stand still) is about the same, maybe a little stronger. I did "have" to hit passing gear one time and she did go.
The M1 looks good in place. The only thing that I think looks incomplete is the open holes for the EGR valve (?) that is required on earlier models. MOPAR should include a cover plate so it doesn't look like something was left off.
If you have any reservations about doing this project yourself, don't. It's fun and easy.

Congrats on the M1 install ! I didn't have the nerve (or the mechanical capabilities) to do the project myself, so I had someone else do the install. It took them 6 hours !
Even though the M1 was pricey (part and labour), I felt it is definitely worth the cost. I didn't lose any low end, and anytime you need that extra power, it is there.

Message: Alright Bill-
Your ready to do mine next, right????
I figured you would hold on to that thing for a few weeks building up the nerve to tear into the engine. But you seem happy now, so I guess it went with out problems.

Hey, I could hardly wait to do the install. Last week I almost played "hooky" from work to do it.
I have a few things you can have/use when your get ready to do yours.
1) Cut off manifold bolts to guide the M1 in place. These are great for guiding the manifold in place so that gaskets won't be disturbed.
2) RTX gasket maker. I have plenty enough left over for an additional install.
3) High temp sealant for plugs and sensors.
You can also use my Craftsman Torque wrench if you need it or other tools.
I will be glad to "watch" you do yours if our schedules permit. Its so much fun though, you probably won't let anyone actually help.
When you gonna do yours?

Message: I'm supposed to get it this week, so maybe this weekend it will go in. I want to hurry up and install it before it gets so hot. I was out in your neck of the woods this weekend on Fry Rd., if I had know where you live I would have checked in on your progress. I may take you up on the offer of parts, will let you know.
Did you say that mopar provided instructions?

Message: Yes I did do this change in two hours and it works great, I am also a firefighter and a part time auto mechanic. I have all the air tools and hand tools to make the job easier. The 4 to 6 hours I'm sure would be the norm. When I said I did mine in two hours I didn't mean to piss anyone off. When you do this sort of thing for a living you do learn tricks to make it faster.

Message: Use a shop vac next to your scraper when removing the old gasket to suck up the old gasket material. This helps alot but you still need to cover the lifter valley.
Tie the wiring harness and fuel rails with injectors to the windshield wiper out of the way. No need to take it all apart.
3hrs first time for a friend. 2.5 hrs. for myself.
Have fun!
