Message: this is my first time getting on here there is alot of confusing info back and forth but gen1dak sounds like a man who knows just what in the hell hes a talking about. now that bein said i got me a 97 slt 3.9 magnum 4wheel drive i heard alot of people say the motor mounts work for puttin a 318 or 360 in it. what i want to know gen1dak is in your opinion what is the simplest least expensive low headache conversion to do i dont mind spending the extra money to do things the right way for example i dont feel like splicing wires to a v-6 harness is the correct way i could ber wrong though no offence to anyone who has.where do i need to start

Message: Thanks, but I don't claim to know every detail and nuance. No 100% promises.
All Magnum V6 and V8 engines mount the same way and with the same mounts. They also have the old-style mounting points for use in pre-Magnum applications. That makes the centering point for all engines the same place, and that's where the engine meets the transmission. Everything from there back is in the same place, regardless of engine. The V8's just stick a little bit further forward. So, get a V8 (OBDII-'96 or newer) and drop it in. If it's a complete pull, that's good. The connectors should all be the same. Almost a plug-n-play deal. Fuel system has same specs. You will need V8 exhaust manifolds. They tie into your stock exhaust if you want stock or aftermarket will fit the same places. You will need the appropriate V8 computer and the engine harness for those extra two injectors. Any 5.2/5.9 OBDII (96 or newer) V8 engine harness should plug right into your existing system.
Stick or auto? There's your next issue. 318 or 360? That matters too due to the 360 being externally balanced. You'll need a V8 torque converter for the fuel injection to work properly. The balance weight for the 5.9 is on the flexplate on the later Magnums, so the torque converter for a 5.2 or 5.9 will work equally. The flexplates are the same except the 5.9 has the balance weight on it. (Earlier models had the weight on the torque converter). For stick models, you need a V8 flywheel....remember, they're balanced differently for the 5.2 and 5.9. You should also consider how you're gonna use the truck. The tranny may need to be upgraded to handle the extra power.
The easiest would be a working pull from a wreck. Failing that, get the closest thing to it.
That should get ya started.
