Subject: 4.7 Electric Fan IP: Logged
Message: How is everyone who has went to electric fan only done there set up? Can you use just the stock electric fan and remove the "standard fan/fan clutch" If you wire the electric fan to run when the engine is on, or is at a certain temperature. Or, do I need to upgrade the fan; if so; what is best.

Message: Good question, I also would like to know about that a little more. I've been looking at a Perma-Cool fan, but I am not sure if I would have to hook up my own temp. based auto on/off. They have those too, but I'd rather use the stock one if there is one..

Message: A lot of guys are just pulling the clutch fan and hoping the best for the summer. Some are adding a 180 therm. I added a 180 therm and a thermostatic switch to turn the fan earlier then the stock 210 degrees.

Message: Hey CW,
How 'bout some details on the thermoelectric switch like where to get it and how to hook it up?
I'd like my electric fan to turn on at 180*-190* instead of the factory 210*.
Feasible???

Message: you should get a 180 stat before pulling out
the clutch fan. I dont know how to tell what
temp my elec fan turns on at, but when the
needle is in the middle of the temp guage, it
kicks in. no problems w/o the clutch fan so
far...the only time the needle reaches the
middle of the guage, is if I let it idle in traffic or
burger king drve thru. On the freeway, the
guage reads all the way cold.

Message: Well...........
Any of you guys south of the Mason Dixon have any input. I live in North Louisianna and in summer, 100+ temps with 80-90% humidity is not unusual.
I have a 2001 4.7 and want to ditch the clutch fan. Would the Black Magic 150 with a 180 T-stat be the way for me to go? I want the extra ponies but not if the engine is going to overheat.

Message: If you have an 01/4.7/factory air the electric fan should already be there. Look thru the viscous fan at the back of the radiator to confirm. Do as I did, install a 180 stat, remove the viscous fan and keep it in the bed under a bungee cord "just in case". Only once last summer did I reinstall it for A/C performance reasons, not engine cooling.

Message: I am in Atlanta and our July/August afternoon temps are in the 100-108 range. The ambient temp on the asphalt of the highways is around 145-150degF. I get stuck in traffic in the afternoons that leaves me sitting in place for 3-5 minutes at a time motionless.
I have no clutch fan, a 180degF t-stat and an eagle eye that I keep on the temp gauge. Whenever you turn on the A/C, the electric fan cycles. Whenever the coolant reaches 210, the electric fan cycles on, as well. when i see that I am getting ready to enter the bad traffic areas, I just flip on the A/C (even if the windows were already down) and that way the fan will give me a head start. The coolant temp RARELY ever reaches 210. And when it does, usually I baby it to keep the motor from pinging anyhow. Additionally, with the aluminum heads of the 4.7 motor, the motor cools right back down quickly.

Message: So to confirm, what controls the stock electric fan? If the AC is on, it's on. If the AC is off and the coolant reaches 210 degrees it comes on. If this is true, i guess you could turn the AC on and set the temperature selector to hot in the event of "an emergency" like stopped traffic in high heat.

Message: That's exactly what I do. I will turn on the A/C and then adjust the temp knob up to where the red meets the blue. This circulates the coolant from the engine thru the heater core (under the dash). But, the cold air from the a/c system is simlutaneously passing over the heater coils, too. This is actually cooling off the engine coolant at the same time that the electric fan is running up front.
The only thing to keep in mind is that the fan is controlled by a relay in the Power Distribution Center. If that relay fails, you've got no fan. That's why you keep your eye on the temp gauge in heavy traffic. If you notice the temp gauge going any higher than 210, then it's time to jump out and make sure you can hear the fan running. Also, jack the temp knob on the dash to full hot.
This is rarely the case, however, since our 4.7 motors run very cool. The plastic intake and aluminum heads make sure of that.
If the relay for the fan fails, you can pull the one for the fog lites (also in the PDC under the hood) and use it in place of the fan relay.
Knocking on wood, my truck has yet to get hot, the fan has yet to fail, and summer is almost completely over in Atlanta.

hahahha
If it's only about 90-94degF and I have nowhere to be after work (no nice clothes required) I just haul ass home on the highway with the windows down. Kinda dumb.....
But when it gets to the damn hi 90's and on up in the 100's, yeah, I turn on the air... I ain't that dumb.
