Here is a weird question. Has anyone had their emergency brake release handle break in half? If so what did the dealer say? do?

Now that's a first. Hopefully they'll do it under warranty.

How about anyone have to pull like 3-4 times to get the park brake light to come off? Ususally only happens when it's really cold (-15 C).

XLTSPCL, I have the same prob with mine but it does not have to be that cold. It usually stays on for a wile or sometimes it does not even come on. Does anybody know what is going on here?

Sounds like a sticky switch. Crawl under your dash and look at the switch by the parking brake pedal. There's continuity checks you can do or have your dealer do. The switch (at least on a 2000) is kind of complex in that several things can cause it to trip, e.g., difference in pressure between back and front brakes, ABS system check, parking brake applied, etc.

if you set your parking brake at -15 C your brake is possibly frozen and will not fully release until it heats up from rotation of the tires. suggest you dont set it in these temp conditions if you have been running through the sonw or get them wet, then there frozen set.

This is after normal highway or city driving. No snow on the brakes. I think the switch gets cold enough to contract a little and not release properly. When the temp is warm there is never a problem. I think after enough use it will break in properly. If not I will be headed to the dealership.

Can't help you there. Haven't seen temps that low or snow in 10 years here in south Louisiana.

We have a 2002 5-speed. Apparently, if you release the clutch with the emergency brake set, you'll totally blow out your rear brakes. Anybody have this problem. They want $1200 to fix it, sounds like a defect to me. Anybody know where to complain?

Lisa,
I understand you were probably searching the old posts, but please, just start a new thread.

This is old, and isn't even about the original post.

And back on the subject of this original, old post,

My handle also broke @33,500 miles.

Dealer had NO problem installing a new one!

Now I release it with less effort, knowing that it's a plastic handle.

I had the handle break on me as well. I am Military staioned in England and don't have a dealer around. I have looked all over the place and cannot find anywhere that sells the handle. I have seen the brake cable and all other parts, but those kits do not include the handle. Thanks for any help you can give. Jason

The handle on my '97 gradually broke over time (guess I was pulling a little too hard...), and I think it was '99 when it needed to get replaced. Went to the dealer, ordered a new handle, had it installed, and off I went. No problems since then (50,000+ miles).

fack54, if the handle itself is not snapped in half (or maybe even if it is), you could try a jerry-rig with a thin piece of aluminum or steel; put a few small holes w/small screws or the like in the metal and the handle, then tighten together. It would probably look like trampled sh!t, but if it works...so what. Or you might be able to just use the metal, roll the bottom edge up so you don't cut your fingers, and go from there. I'm probably way off, but I hope that gives you some ideas.

I own a 2004 Dadge Dakota V-8 four door truck. and I love it. But recently I went to release the emercency break which I normally dont use and the release handle snapped off. This is the secon time this has happened. The first time was shortly after i bought the truck brand new. Does this seem to be a recurring problem with this truck. The first time it was covered under the warrenty. But you would think they would construct something more sturdy than a piece of plastic. Now they say it will cost me approx. $25.00 to repair.I think it is in the poor design of the latch itself. NOT My FAULT !!

Mine broke off last summer. I just continue releasing it with what is left of the handle. I use my emergency brake every time I park the truck. I've really gotten use to the fact that it is broken off.
